Show Commission authorizes Housing Authority The Iron County Commission voted to form a housing authority which could provide needy residents with low rent housing through grants from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. Meeting with Kym Anderson and Ruth McGee, the commissioners were informed of the need in Iron County for such housing especially by senior citizens. Local women who work with the elderly in the area presented lists of names of those elderly people who would be interested in such housing primarily from Parowan and Cedar City. "This can keep a lot of people out of rest homes. ..This is our area of biggest need," said one woman. , A five member board comprised of the three commissioners and possibly the mayor of Parowan and Cedar City will review the developments. Rents would be based on income with HUD picking up the cost when it is more than one fourth of the person's income. The maximum income allowed for living in such a unit would be $9,000 per year. Besides the elderly, the w6men explained that the housing could be used for the handicapped, large families or other persons. They said that the authority's board could set its priorities on who to rent to and that rentals are done on a "first come, first served" basis. Other Business -The commission agreed to make the time period for building permits 24 months. -The commission received bids for improvements in the Monte Vista subdivision. The apparent low bidder was R.A. Childs totaling $64,768.60. The special improvement district's engineer Phylip Leslie will consult with the residents concerning the bids. -The commission agreed to send a letter supporting plans for an iron ore mining and pig iron operation near Paragonah provided the operation acquires its water, area residents do not object and clean air standards are maintained. Reed Pulley of the proposed operation said that the letter was necessary to secure an FHA guaranteed loan. -The commission reviewed its various boards but made no new apointments. |
