Doctors were puzzled' when Melinda, a full-term baby, weighed only 3-14 pounds at birth. She was, apparently, a normal baby, if rather tiny. At six days she developed spinal meningitis menin-gitis and almost lost her life to the disease. She developed develop-ed hydrocephalus and it was necessary to surgically place a shunt in her head to drain the fluid from her brain. At the age of three, Melinda Me-linda began to seizure. From the seizures and problems that followed, she became paralyzed on the right side. Melinda lived in one of the southern states with her parents. par-ents. A relative living in Salt Lake City, told Me-linda's Me-linda's parents about Primary Pri-mary Children's Medical Center. Because Melinda 's condition had worsened her parents decided to leave their home and drive to Salt Lake City in an effort to find help for their daughter. In a family council, it had been decided to take up residence resi-dence in Utah until Melinda improved. She had begun to lapse into comas. It was found that Melinda needed a shunt revision. A new brace was made for Melinda's paralyzed leg which has made it much easier for her to walk. Her parents feel that for the first time Melinda Me-linda is being treated as a total person with physicians and therapists working together to-gether to give their daughter daugh-ter a new hope for the future. The Birth Defects Clinic at Primary Children's Medical Med-ical Center sees many children chil-dren such as Melinda. The Clinic had its inception in 1963 and provides care for infants and children with multiple problems.
