Show And we pick up the tab This column, written by B. Davis Evans in the Spanish Fork Press last July, is as timely today as then. We reprint it here as a challenge to President Carter. A small fry like me who writes in small amounts, should stick with small subjects, but sometimes I get so darn angry, I have to go big time and stir around in that mammoth mam-moth unknown world of politics. I'm smart enough to know I'll do no good, but confused enough to know I'll feel better if I express myself. So Dear Reader, if you've heard or read enough on the subject, stop here. If not, come along. I suppose our Uncle Sammy is the biggest big-gest waster of money that the world has ever known. No Commander-in-Chief of the last 5, 6 or 7 has had enough guts to even try to plug up the holes in the dike. ; Did you know that we are spending $13.9 million annually to maintain 300 military golf courses throughout the United States and around the world? One would think those overpaid birds could pay their own way on public courses. Face lifts, breast enlarge-,ment enlarge-,ment operations are regularly performed ' on wives of military personnel and you and I are picking up the tab so some general somewhere can have a sturdier looking wife. The government is spending $13 million mil-lion a year to provide 800 bureaucrats in Washington with chauffeured limousines. The VS. Navy produced a $64,000 film series: "How to Succeed With Brunettes," and another, "Blondes Prefer Gentlemen." Our uncle makes around 2000 films per year and most of them are about as important to the good of our country as those listed above. If we could find a man for President who had some salt in his blood, he might put a stop to at least some of these goofy activities. Washington is overloaded with antique, unneeded agencies and programs and the result of all these leaks and thousands of others too numerous and ridiculous to mention, men-tion, our Uncle is presenting borrowing$l. 5 billion a week to pay his bills. The gross federal debt is expected to "pass $605 billion by the end of this month, June, 1976, (some birthday present, huh?). We, the taxpayers, are currently paying over $30 billion per year in interest on the present debt. Economists calculate the the average taxpayer must work four months each year just to pay his total federal, state and local taxes. The horrible truth is "waste and corruption cor-ruption is all about us, yet so many of us relax and feel it can go on forever . . ." We consider the New York City situation a result of stupid administrating. To triis little man, the problem in Washington is the same thing, only on a bigger scale, therefore, it takes longer to crumble. We need a President who has guts enough to stand up and do something about the Washington mess. I love this country and I want her to survive so that my children and my children's chil-dren's children can enjoy the freedoms that I've enjoyed, but how can that be when we have so many parasites hanging on to the sides of our Ship of State? |
