Show UP ASSEMBLING PARADE TRAIN TO WORLD FAIR The longest parade of the Expo '74 World's Fair year will start in Omaha, Neb., on Monday, April 15 and wind up in Spokane, Wash., on Friday, April 26. The 2 200 -mile route will be traversed by a special parade train now being assembled as-sembled by Union Pacific Railroad. The train will be powered by UP's famed steam locomotive, No. 8444, one of the last operating steam locomotives owned by a major American railroad. rail-road. A special flatcar is being equipped with signs and flag poles to carry U. S. and state flags of the 13 western states served by Union Pacific to the World's Fair. Starting with a 10:00 a.m. flag raising ceremony at Omaha Union Station on the 15th, the parade train will pick up state flags at ceremonies cere-monies in Cheyenne, Wyo., on the 16th; Salt Lake City, Utah, on April 18: Boise, Ida., on the 20th and Portland, Port-land, Ore., on the 23rd, then on to Spokane. Scheduling calls for daylight operation between cities to provide all communities along the route an opportunity to view and photograph the parade. Old 8444's engineer has been designated special courier for messages from the 13 Union Pacific states to Expo '74 and Governor Dan Evans of Washington. Upon its arrival in Spokane, 8444 will be placed on public display near the Expo '74 site for the duration dura-tion of the Fair. UP is also erecting a unique theater -in -the -round to be called "The Roundhouse" Round-house" that will present a nine -minute, circular multi -screen show on how railroads fit into man's environment. The Roundhouse Round-house Theater will be one of several exhibits in the "Joy of Living" pavillion at the World's Fair. |
