Show U of U Ready For Fall Registration As the harvest moon grows larger and the nights begin to take on a new crispness, students stu-dents are preparing to start the new school year and the University of Utah is also ready to announce innovations innova-tions and additions to University Univer-sity life. With an expected increase in enrollment , of nearly 10 per cent, several new building projects are being hurried along for the school opening. The additional facilities offer students new service and classrooms to help them gain more knowledge and experience experi-ence at the "U". The second phase of the Joseph F. Merrill Mer-rill Engineering Build;ng and University Village, the newly erected housing for married students, have both been completed. com-pleted. The new University Bookstore and the remodeling of the former Engineering Building tailoring it to the needs of the Physics Department Depart-ment are expected to be complete com-plete by school opening. For the first time in the history of the University there will be some entering freshmen fresh-men excused from part or all o f their freshman English courses. Those scoring in the top five per cent in their placement exams will receive this special consideration. The plan will allow students with proven ability in English several sev-eral more credit hours to use as they wish. This plan of excusing students stu-dents from certain classes will be in conjunction with a new program being innovated by Utah colleges and high schools. The other phase of the plan will call for students of exceptional ex-ceptional ability to complete high school courses in general fields for which they will receive re-ceive college credits. Thus, by taking the special courses a student may enter the university univer-sity with some college credit already completed. The ultimate ulti-mate goal of this program is to enable freshmen to have a year's credit upon entering college so he may complete his University work in only three years. The program will provide great economy for the student and the taxpayer, because be-cause there will not be duplication dupli-cation of work in high school and college. The programs are being pioneered in the In- termountain region by Utah schools. On September 12 placement tests will be given for local entering freshmen and on September 14 for out-of-town freshmen. Counseling section meetings for freshmen will be held Sept. 19 to help the newcomers new-comers to select their programs pro-grams of study. On Sept. 20 the transfer students will hold their counseling sections. Registration for all students will be conducted on Sept. 22 and 23. On Sept. 25 everyone faculty included will knuckle down to business with the first day of class work. |
