Show 7 A "successful" man today i is the guy that pays more to support the government than it costs to support his wife and children. Dunno whether the steak fry the Wildlifers pitched Tuesday evening (postponed from the week end because of rain) can match the one we were bragging brag-ging about that the Ranch Canyon Riders pitched, but it was certainly enjoyable. The evening wasn't quite as "damp" as the Riders party, but the steaks were delectable, the Dutch oven spuds were done to just the right crisp-ness, crisp-ness, and Wes and Les, officiating offici-ating over the coals, knew how to handle their duties. And later, the group enjoyed a very interesting wildlife film in the Methodist Church Annex. An-nex. And we dont wanna forget Bonadurer ... he furnished an auxiliary light plant, so everyone could see what they was eatin' while they were j eatin'. One of Elvvood's customers custom-ers couldn't figure out which new thermometer to buy, so she took a Fahrenheit ; one; said she'd seen that brand advertised a lot. It's always nice to hear about "home town boys" who "made good in the big city." A letter from Pacific Standard Stand-ard Life Insurance Co. advises that Gordon Murdock, who left Milford to affiliate with their organization in Santa Rose, Calif., and was later transferred trans-ferred to their Phoenix office as district manager, has been appointed vice-president and managing general agent for Purchasers Protection Plan in Arizona, and assistant treasurer treas-urer of Pacific Standard Life. Gordon, the letter said, is "in complete charge of all company activties in the state of Arizona," with headquarters in the Guaranty Bank Building in Phoenix. Wanted: Middle aged lady (late 30s-early 30s-early 40s) for part time work in Milford. Interesting work, good pay. Write Box X-l, Beaver County News, for interview. inter-view. Babe Ruth, county deputy director of Civil Defense in charge of Information and Education Ed-ucation (among other duties) is sorta getting around. Last Saturday he appeared before the South Milford Community Com-munity Club, he is endeavoring endeavor-ing to arrange meetings at Minersville, Greenville and Beaver, and on Monday, Sept. 25, he addresses an open meeting meet-ing at the I O O F Hall in Milford, which will be attended attend-ed by all local Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, and to which the general public is invited. Incidentally, Mr. Ruth will be in Arizona this week end attending sessions of the Sovereign Sov-ereign Grand Lodge of the Independent In-dependent Order of Odd Fellows. Fel-lows. Next week: A reprint on the story R. H. Ruth wrote in 1955 after witnessing an atomic bomb explosion at the Nevada Test Site. We especially call this article ar-ticle to the attention of those who, for any reason, "scoff" at Civil Defense. Babe says his insomnia is Setting so bad lately he can't even 6leep when it's time get up. Note to "Disgusted": Most newspapers ignore unsigned un-signed and anonymous letters. Wanna sign your name? Haven't heard much in the Political line yet, except a few rumors and some talk from one or two citizens who are gng friends to run for of-ice of-ice in the upcoming city election. elec-tion. Wonder why so many guys want other guys to run for of"ce, but give with a vigorous vig-orous "No Sir . . . not on Continued on Page Three Here's More About ' " 'Vr I DUNNO Continued from Page One) your life!" when someone suggests sug-gests that maybe they'd be a pretty good mayor or city councilman themselves. This year Milford elects a mayor and two city council-men. council-men. Deadline for filing is Saturday, October 21. Last Monday Lola Lamb, Milford's delegate on the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Pilgrimage Pilgrim-age for Youth to the United Nations, spoke before an as- sembly in the IOOF Hall and showed slides taken on her trip. The general public was invited and those who attended attend-ed report a most enjoyable evening. Enjoyed a visit last week from Howard Blood (relative of the former governor), public relations manager of Mountain States, and this time he brought along a big shot, Frank Sawyer, a vp we think (and certainly a VIP), and assistant as-sistant to the vice president and general manager of Mountain Moun-tain States. Always nice to see those guys, and we always chat for a few minutes about Menzies Benson, who was manager of Beaver County when we came ' A here in 1945 and now is the boss of half a dozen areas like Murray and Sandy, etc. They took us to dinner . . . only trouble was they didn't give us any notice and we settled set-tled for a pie-and-coffee instead in-stead of the steak we'd have worked up an appetite for if we'd known they were coming. Incidentally, isn't the service on tolls out of Cedar getting better, and how about the sweetness and courtesy of the voices they have on the long-lines long-lines switchboard now. Mary Says: If your palm itches, it's a sign you're going to get something. If you itch any place else, it's a sign you've got it. |
