Show 'Round the Town Seen and Heard By EDGAR Lawlessness There seems to be a wave of petty lawlessness going around. People report things stolen and broken on their cars, air let out of tires and similar irritating things. Firemen attending a first aid class last week report that several of their cars were rifled and that the car belonging to Clark Blake had a jar of peach 1 preserves spilled on the seat so i that when he got into the car ; he got the preserve all over his trousers. It is hard to understand the type . of minds that think up tricks of this kind things that are of . benefit to no one. It seems to 1 me that the citizens of this com- munity, as well as its law enforcement en-forcement officials, need to all be on the lookout for the ones who are doing these contemptible tricks. And the first one caught should be given the full penalty of , the law. Synthetic Rubber Those of us who think the synthetic syn-thetic rubber problem will provide pro-vide the nation with tires are probably victims of wishful thinking. think-ing. Best guess is that there will be no civilian rubber whatsoever for the duration of the war all that will be made will be needed for military purposes. However, there are millions of cars in this country that have good rubber. During the past two years there were an unusually large number of new cars sold and most of these should still have good rubber. rub-ber. Then, too, many people anticipated an-ticipated the tire shortage and bought tires prior to rationing so that there are still a lot of cars that can be used for traveling. It is forecast that 35 per cent of America's cars will be off the roads in. a year and that two-thirds two-thirds will be through in two or three years. This would indicate that the tourist business should be off about one-third this year What happens after that is anyone's any-one's guess. Basketball Sidelights Hurricane should clinch the Dixie district title and represent this district at the tournament. However the loss last night to Kanab makes it necessary for them to beat Parowan. Coach Walter Brooks' boys are the best team in this section and should make a good showing at the tournament. He has a well-balanced team that usually manages to come through in the pinches When Cedar held Langston down Terry came through for 21 points to show what the other boys will do if a team concentrates too much on Langston. . . . Enterprise Enter-prise is to be congratulated on the fine showing they made this year. Coach Theron Snyder's boys really played some fine ball. It has been a long time since Coach Lee Hafen's Dixie squad has missed going to the tournament. tourna-ment. His teams are always a favorite with the tournament fans. They are regularly given credit for being the most colorful and interesting team and Lee is recognized rec-ognized throughout the state for his ability as a coach. One thing you can always be sure of and that is that Lee's team will be a fighting team and will win a lot of games because it doesn't know when it is beaten. The game here this year with Cedar clearly showed that. I Spring Has 'Sprung' From the work that is being done on the lawns in St. George it appears that we would have some better lawns this year. I don't believe that there has been a year since I have been here that there has been as much fertiliz-in fertiliz-in gdone as there is being done this season. . . . The weeping willows are sending forth their leaves and the buds are beginning to swell on the other trees so it won't be too long before they will start to leaf out. ... It I is about time as most of us are i down right tired of the cold weather that we had in February. Febru-ary. . . . Since I mentioned my "high water bill" last summer I will now report my low one $5.86. That is not out of the way at all for our home and the apartment apart-ment for a three-month period. However, one reason for that low was that most of the members of both families were away for a considerable time during the time covered by the bill. |
