Show Citizens of County To Be Organized Into Defense Group Units To organize all citizens of Utah, men and women, into a compact group prepared for the civilian defense of the state and its property, prop-erty, registration of men and women in every county of the state has been called for by Governor Gov-ernor Herbert B. Maw, chairman of the State -Council of Defense. In a letter this week to all county commissioners, he asked Wednesday, Sept. 17, to be set aside within counties for registration registra-tion to be conducted by any civic, church, fraternal or military groups designated by the County Council formed by the county commissioners. The registration places will give all who care to assist in defense work, a chance to satisfy their desire to cooperate and to select the type of work to which they would prefer being assigned if and when any emergency arises. Blanks for registration will be forwarded to all county commis-( commis-( Continued on page eight) Defense Training Units (Continued from first page) sioners this week. Cards, signed by Governor Maw, identifying individuals in-dividuals as members of the state defense forces, will be presented to the civilian army of men and women. The registration does not imply any enlistment in military service. The entire week of Sept. 14 to 20 has been made State Defense Week by proclamation of the Governor. In that time, he hopes to have local county defense councils organized, the program of defense explained in church, clubs, civic groups and everywhere every-where an audience may be found interested in the protection of the state, its citizens and its property. The Civilian Defense movement is already actively engaged in the housing and care of workers on national defense projects within the state, and as county councils are formed will extend the scope of the work. |
