Show Car Thieves Arrested Here Saturday By Patrolman L. A. Porter Two 15-year-old boys were arrested ar-rested Saturday, Feb. 14, by Patrolman Pa-trolman L. A. Porter near the Utah-Arizona line and charged with the theft of Owen Frei's truck, from which they were draining gas to fill a Ford, which it later turned out was stolen from in front of the Las Vegas hospital Thursday. The car belonged be-longed to Dr. J. R. McDaniel Jr. When questioned by officers the boys, Robert Ferris of Los Angeles, An-geles, and Glen Kellerman of Culver Cul-ver City, confessed that they had run away from the California Junior Republic school, a private institution, (this was the third offense) .They stated that they had stolen a 'car in Pamona on Wednesday, Feb. 11 and had abandoned it in Las Vegas, prior to stealing Dr. McDaniels car. They pushed the car off the road and that night robbed rob-bed the Nevins' station on the slope, taking candy, gum, some money and a savings deposit book. Then went back and slept that night in the car. The next morning they hitched a ride into St. George and then stole Frei's truck . while he was at work on the Tabernacle grounds. The boys were held here until the U. S. Marshal came for them from Salt Lake City. They will be turned over to the F. B. I. states Patrolman Porter. Blockade Held A blockade was held last week with the result that 80 cars were stopped and checked to see if they had a driver's license with them. The officers report only 5 didn't have. Similar blockades will be held in the future. Offi cers also warn that it is against the law for car owners to leave keys in the car. They point out that it is under these circumstances circum-stances that , thieves are able to steal cars. Car Thieves Arrested Officers report that Edward Barney, Leon E. Gladstone and Jim Kaighn, all of Salt Lake, were arrested here Feb. 11th, when they attempted to drive through here in a stolen car. The men were seen going through St. George and followed by officers. When they got near the checking station sta-tion they jumped out of the car and attempted to escape through the fields, but were arrested by officers. They were brought here and held until picked up by the U. S. Marshal. |
