Show Betenson Recommends Removal Of 2000 Doe Deer This Year Declaring that the removal of 2000 doe deer would not be enough to stop range erosion, Blaine Betenson, Dixie forestry supervisor, told Rotary club members mem-bers that every effort should be made to see that the full 2000 doe deer were taken off the Dixie forest this year. Supervisor Betenson Beten-son was the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the club on last Friday noon. "Sentiment has changed toward the removal of doe deer in the last year", said Supervisor Betenson, Beten-son, "due to a better understanding understand-ing of range conditions". He went on to state the policy of the forestry department and to explain ex-plain that his department wanted to carry just as much livestock and deer on the range as the range would carry. According to information he presented to the club, the Dixie range is being depleted faster (Continued on page ten) Doe Removal f (Continued from first page) than it can be replaced. He told 1 of the various places in the state '4 and nation where a similar con- -,e dition had existed and the re- suits that followed. "We must remove deer to a point where a the range will carry them, or x they will remove themselves", he averred. "This is no new problem, 1 , and we have plenty of evidence '., to go on to show that we must "'c keep the deer and livestock with- t in the carrying capacity of the range or we will have no range, deer or livestock. At the present time it will be necessary to bring , the stock down below the carry- ir ing capacity for the range to ' come back to normal condition. Then we must keep the deer and j livestock within the carrying capacity of the range." . . When asked if he thought the removal of 2000 doe deer would be enough, he replied that the r' forestry department didn't think jj' so. "Every effort must be made to see that the full 2000 doe deer are removed since removal of this number will not be enough ' to protect the range", stated Mr. I Betensen. T Supervisor Betenson gave a "j short review of the establishment of the Forestry department in this country and on the Dixie : Forest and of the work that had ;'; been done there since the Forest- f, ry department was in charge. , |
