Show i . What Is The Yalue of the Dixie Junior College ? As the Dixie junior college gets underway with a record enrollment this year we stop to wonder just what the school means to this section. Certainly it can mean a lot to many students who use it as a step to further knowledge an opportunity to go on to the educational attainments that they have set as their goal. It means a lot to this community as a financial asset since a considerable sum of money is brought into this city as a direct result of the school. It also means a great deal from a cultural standpoint, both to the students who attend and to this entire section that receives its benefits. Towns that have junior colleges and colleges, have a much finer social life. People who attend college have their outlook on life broadened and they take it into their everyday life with the result that everyone in this section feels the result. To our way of looking at it this school has every opportunity op-portunity to grow with the educational needs of this section. Once upon a time we thought it was okeh if a child only went through the Eighth grade. Later this . was extended to the end of High school. Now we are beginning to realize that for a young person to be able to compete in this day and age, he must have additonal training. More and more people are sending their children to college and more and more people will send their children to Junior colleges particularly will this be true as the Junior colleges are able to add to their vocational training. In the old days young people were given the opportunity op-portunity of going into a trade or business and learning it while working. Today, because of the expensive machinery used, laws governing the hours and wages paid to minors, trained people out of work and the policy of labor unions in protecting their members, it has become increasingly hard for young people to find the opportunity to learn by working. The answer to this will be that we will have to train our young people more and more in schools. This naturally calls for additional expense in the operation of schools and in consequence is delayed in coming into its full reality. In California and other states that have great sums of money for education, educators have adopted this program and it is now possible for one to learn almost anything any-thing in school. A |
