Show Legion Auxiliary Hears Prize Winning Essays At Monday Meet At their regular February meeting meet-ing held Monday night in the South Ward Chapel, the American Ameri-can Legion Auxiliary unit, Lester Keate Post No. 90, had in attendance at-tendance the eight boys and girls of the elementary school, whose essays were selected for entry in the local finals of the national annual contest on problems of conservation in the United States. The subject assigned this year to the elementary schools is "The Conservation of American Forests". For-ests". There were also definite assignments for the Junior high school departments and invitations were extended to the local schools to participate, but much to the disappointment of the Legion Auxiliary, who annually sponsor this event, no response from either department has been received. Pres. Hettie Bentley conducted the meeting. Mrs. Lida Prince and Mrs. Delia Fordham were in charge of the program. Instructor Charles Olsen was present with more than fifty members of his junior high school band in uniform. They provided four, selections as follows: "Flag Day", "Spirit of America", "Stars and Stripes Forever" and "Military "Mili-tary Escort". Contest Papers Contest papers were from the (Continued on page eight) Legion Auxiliary Meet (Continued from first page) two fifth grades taught by Miss IMishie Seegmiller and Ferdinand i Stucki and from the sixth grades under Israel Neilson and K. M. Cannon. The entire list of papers j had been previously read and selections for this final entry made ! by disinterested, ex-school teachers I from Cedar City and were given 'placement as follows: Sixth grade, j Calvin Cottam and Norman Hafen ; jsecond place, Mishie Bentley and Evalyn Kuntz: Fifth Grade, first j place, Beverly Baldwin and Lois I Kemp; second place, Charlene Snow and Laura Mecham. From these eight essays which were read by the writers at this meeting, meet-ing, final first and second 'selec-j 'selec-j tions will be made. Just what the : local awards will consist of has i not yet been decided, but the prizes will be given with other awards at a special school program, pro-gram, which Principal Vernon Worthen will announce later. Miss Evalyn Kunz won first place in the 1937 contest. |
