Show Hurricane-LaVerkin Bridge Over Virgin Hears Completion Thousands Of Tons Of Material Used In Its Construction; Road Contract Let Satisfactory progress is reported report-ed by G. P." Holohan, superintendent superinten-dent of construction for Christen-sen Christen-sen and Gardner, contractors who have the contract for the construction con-struction of the bridge over the Virgin River between Hurricane and La Verkin. Superintendent Halahan anticipates the completion comple-tion of the arch of the bridge by August 10. According to Mr. Holohan, 613 tons of steel and five carloads of cement of 800 sacks to the carload car-load or a total of 4,000 sacks of cement will be used in its construction. con-struction. The north half of the span is now completed and work is going forward on the south half. The bridge is 184 feet high and 400 feet long. There is only one other bridge in the world like it said Mr. Holohan. Nineteen thousand thou-sand rivets will be used in the steel work. A special derick had to be brought here from California to handle the thirty ton beams. Between three and four thousand thou-sand yards of excavation were necessary before the steel work began. The false work of the bridge is thirty feet above the water of the Virgin river. Twenty-six Twenty-six thousand bolts and burs were used in the false work which was made of 200,000 feet of timber. The work is being done under the the supervision of W. E. Johnson, engineer. Road Open September 1 Indications are that the road will be open about September 1. A dedication program is being planned by the Hurricane Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce assisted by the people from that section. It is anticipated that Governor Henry H. Blood and some of the State Road officials will be present at the dedication program. This program pro-gram is taking form and officials in charge declare that everything points to an outstanding success. Oiling of Road The contract for the oiling of of the road between Harrisburg bench at U. S. Highway 91 and the LaVerkin junction was to have been let yesterday. With oiling of this road and the completion of the bridge, the east and west ends of Washington county will have been joined with a graded and oiled road. This road will also cut off about ten miles for the tourist going to or from the parks. It will also lessen the distance for Washington Wash-ington County citizens. |
