Show MISSIONARY ENJOYS READIXu THE WASHINGTON CO. NEs Hildesheim, Deutschland October 2 1st, 1926 Dear Editor: Just a word from Deutschland to express my appreciation, for the County paper which I read now with more interest than at any period ot my life at home, and reap its U value. It is now nearly a year since we arrived in Cologne, Germany, un learned in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and unable to go anywhere, or do anything without the aid of an interpreter. inter-preter. The cities of ancient Germany Ger-many were then very queer to us, as well as the customs, habits, ways of living, and in fact the people themselves. them-selves. Germany is far behind America in general progress, and has not the resources of development but she has many ancient reminiscences, points of interest, such as old cathedrals, cath-edrals, palaces, museums, art gal leries, and relics possessed by the kings and rulers of Europe, buildings still standing built in the eighth and ninth centuries, which produce historic his-toric values relating back to the time of Christ, and with the aid of modern mod-ern revelation, one gains a living testimony, of the truthfulness of the Gosepl, which can not be made so impressive, by one who does not have the opportunity of seeing these wonderful won-derful ancient values. I am now laboring in the city of Hildesheim, which has a population reaching nearly 60,000 of which one third belong to the Catholic church. My companion and I are having the privilege of preaching the Gosepl for the first time here, being the first Mormon missionaries, coming here about two months ago. Hildesheim is made famous through the beautifully beauti-fully carved and painted timber work found on the old houses built during the 12th and 13th centuries. It is one of the very oldest cities of northern north-ern Germany, and in the south part of the city still stands the old part, known as old Hildesheim, and monuments monu-ments such as the Roland Fountain, "Roland was a great leader and con-querer con-querer of his time," also Bishop Bernward, one of the leaders in building up Hildesheim, and with a little imaginative power one couil easily imagine himself back in the days when knighthood was in flower. I have had the opportunity of seeing some of the wonders and educational education-al values of Germany, especially noteworthy is the Rheiuland. the beautiful scenes, which are incom- . parable with other scenes of a differ ent nature, and I agree with the Germans Ger-mans when "they say "Es gibt bloss einen Rhein." "There is only one Rhine." I can appreciate the value of a mission experience, and am trying io do my little bit in the spreading of our message to the world, I can say that for the months of August and September. Hirschi, Stucki, Hafen, all of the St. -George, Stake, were the three highest traders in the Swiss and German mission. I am enjojing my work wonderfully and realize now why all returned missionaries say that they have learned more in that period than in any other period of their lives, for the same length of time, as I can truly say that duviri? the past year my eyes have been opened to the world, and can see now a larger circle, and have received historical, and educational values that can be gained in no other way. We are leaving our message in many homes every day and hope to see the day when this message will take root and flourish, that many will receive the benefits, that will lift them up out of their low moral conditions due largely to the late war, and place them, on the road to progress, and everlasting life. We have held but two meetings here and have had 27 friends in attendance. at-tendance. A Lutherian pastor, fearing fear-ing that he would lose a few members protested against our using a Lutherian Luther-ian school room and resulted in our losing the room, however, after a months delay we have received another an-other school room, and are sure we will have success in the city of Hildesheim. Hilde-sheim. Germany has her wonders, but one can never forget the hind whose blessings were promised by those of old, Germany is n hind of the V3'1' hut America is 11 land of the future, and the day will soon enough come when 1 will bo permitted to return, and partake of .her freedom. shine and flowers.
