Show REPORT MANY DEER IN P.UOOILLS Rangers and Warden Investigate Game Conditions on East Slope of Mountain. A total of 266 head of deer were seen by Forest Supervisor, Olsen, Ranger Benjamin Swapp and Warden Oliver Stratton who spent two days in the foothills of Pine Valley mountain last week. The ground is bare of snow in places and the deer are bunching bunch-ing up in that section. The territory between Anderson's and Danish ranch, a few miles to the west of Anderson's was covered. cov-ered. The first day out 48 deer were counted and the next day 118. There was a large percentage percent-age of bucks in the herds, but no attempt was made to estimate the number. The snow at that altitude is about 18 inches deep on the level, with the slopes bare in places. The animals were found to be in good condition and nothing was noted to cause alarm, either in the game situation or forage conditions. con-ditions. The trip was made with the purpose of checking conditions condi-tions in the forest, as to number of deer, their condition and the forage outlook for this season. The men are convinced that the method adopted last year for the control of hunting on the preserve pre-serve is the proper procedure and that it should be continued as conditions warrant. One of the problems confronting the forest service and game associations is to keep down the natural increase in deer to the point where the number can be taken care of by the forage provided in the forest. |
