Show ST. GEORGE CCC CAMP TO IMPROVE WOLF HOLE ROAD November 12, 1935 Work was begun today on the road to Wolf Hole by approximately one hundred hun-dred and fifty members of the Civilian Conservation Corps from the St. George camp. Captain Bryant, commanding the company, com-pany, released that number to the Technical Service for work on this project. The men were transported from the camp to the beginning of the job at the Utah-Arizona Utah-Arizona line, in trucks belonging to the Division of Grazing and there put tQ work under the Su-pervisioa Su-pervisioa of the superintendent and. -Hires roremen, - ' - ' The project involves the con struction or aDoui; iwenty-uue miles of road from the Utah-Arizona Utah-Arizona line to Wolf Hole and will follow the present route quite closely. The biggest deviation devia-tion from the existing roadway is in the first seven miles, from the line to Mociac Spring. In this stretch, the new location lies somewhat east of the present route and follows the backbone of a ridge which carries it around the head and above most of the heavy drainage which crosses the old road. Grades have been limited to a maximum of 10 per cent and there is only one or two short stretches where a 10 per cent, rate of grade is reached. Mostly the grade is below 6 per cent, which is con-! sidered high gear for all cars.) After passing Mociac Spring the road follows along the route that has been used for so many years and from there to the top of Quail Canyon, steeper grades are encountered. The maximum in .this stretch will be about 13 per cent near the top of the Canyon, hut as there is now a stretch exceeding ex-ceeding 16 per cent for a couple of hundred feet, this will be an improvement. Curves will he flattened out as much as possible and where the present roadbed follows the bottom of washes or canyons, it has been re-routed beside be-side or above them. From the top of Quail Canyon over to Wolf Hole, the present alignment is followed very closely b u t is straightened out and drained considerably. con-siderably. I Heavy equipment has not ar-! ar-! rived yet and so the work was begun today with small hand tools, but even under this handi-j handi-j cap, Superintendent Thompson re- ports progress as satisfactory. , The project is estimated to take labcut ten thousand man days. |
