Show WHAT ZION PARK CCC's ARE DOING The question is often asked: Is there really any work for the CCC camps to do in Zion Park? Here is part of the answer: On one project, probably one of the largest irf the park, known as Road Sloping on the Switchbacks, Switch-backs, over a quarter of a million mil-lion yards of dirt and rock are to be moved in order that the road will be made safer for travel, and that maintenance costs may be reduced. When the contract for construction of the road approaching the Zion tunnel was completed the slopes on the cuts above the road were left practically perpendicular, one to one or less than one to one slope. During the years since the 'road was opened, erosion, slides, ! frosts etc. have made these slopes ; a constant danger to motorists, "and have made maintenance and repairs of the road unduly ex- pensive. The present road sloping project pro-ject by crews from the CCC camp calls for the reduction of these slopes to at least one and one-fourth, one-fourth, . or one and one-half, to one and the removal of all loose or dangerous, rock. Where necessary nec-essary rock retaining walls are being built sufficiently high to insure the bank above remaining at this slope. The dirt which is ! irce andv formation is being hauled away and the rock is used for masonrv work on other projects pro-jects and for cribbing along the channels of the Virgin river. I Sixtv to eighty men are being 1 used dailv on this project, as well 'as six to ten trucks a compressor i and jack hammer outfit, qnarry-i qnarry-i ing equipment and masonry ex-! ex-! perts It is expected that later .these slopes will be artificially reseeded as further protection, against erosional forces. This is 'onlv one of four of the largest projects for Zion CCC camps. |
