Show ) 6? AUa "Quick Myton 2nd's Rick Nielsen gave Roosevelt 4th's softballers fits all night in the Junior's Multi-Region Tournament. Tourna-ment. Thursday. Nielsen led off with a homer in the top of the first inning to drive in Mike Ross and give his team a 2-0 lead. In his next at bat, Nielsen connected with the softball for an inside the park homer to increase his team's lead to eight runs at 9-1. Roosevelt 4th said, "No, No" to any swinging action at the plate by Nielsen as they walked him on purpose in the top of the fourth inning. The Roosevelt 4th team decided to pitch to Nielsen in the top of the sixth inning instead of giving him a free pass to first base and it was a costly mistake as Nielsen ripped rip-ped the softball for a three-run homer and a 15 to 10 advantage. Roosevelt 4th decided that enough was enough and walked Nielsen on purpose in the top of the seventh inning. Nielsen was 3 fur 3 in the game and had two walks. He connected for three homers in Myton 2nd's 24 to 12 triumph over Roosevelt 4th. The Myton 2nd team was filled with Nielsens. Brothers. Rick and Russ Nielsen were starters on the team and Doug Ni'-lsen. a cousin, was also a member of the team. Twice, big brother, Kick, knocked in younger brother, Russ. v. ith home runs. Rick Nielsen had oinii' runs batted in for Myton 2nd in the championship game. Kick Nielsen didn't produce a homer in the top of the seventh inning, but he still scored a run for his teammates the bard way. Nielsen reached first base when he was walked on puruosc. Derrell fiillman slugged a double and Nielsen rounded third base. At the last moment Nielsen stopped in his tracks and decided to return to third base. I Ic dove lor the bag and hi- was sale as the throw to the bag got t.v the third baseman. Nielsen got up and charged down the base line and scored a run-for run-for Myton 2nd. Myton 2nd had a good one, two punch in their lineup. Rick Nielsen in the number three spot in the lineup hit three homers and drove in eight runs. The number four and cleanup batter, Derrell Gillman, also turned in a good job at the plate. Nielsen hit a homer in the top of the first inning and Gillman followed the Nielsen blast with a single. Nielsen produced an inside in-side the park homer in the top of the second inning and Gillman matched Nielsen's feat with an inside park homer of his own. Nielsen drilled the Roosevelt 4th's pitcher with a mighty three run homer blast in the top of the sixth inning and Gillman followed Nielsen with a triple. Nielsen was walked on purpose in the top of the seventh inning and Gillman struck for a double. The Conklin brothers continued their dominance of tennis in the L'intah Basin area with championships in the UBIC Tournament. Rod Conklin beat Tom Sprouse, 4-6, 6-1. 6-2. for the men's singles title and Tom Conklin won the boys' singles. Rod and Tom Conklin won the doubles championship and Rod teamed up with Rose Mary Bigelow for top honors in the mixed doubles at the UBIC Tournament. Rod Conklin won the singles crown at the Vernal City Tennis Tournament and his brother Tom won the boys'singles. Rod and Tom Conklin also grabbed the Vernal City Tennis Tournament doubles title. Youth baseball action began in May in the city of Vernal and now the final tournament of the year in Vernal. West Zone Tournament is set for August 10-13. l.V The youth baseball season has been filled with excitement. excite-ment. Three teams. Cubs, Yankees and Braves, tied for first place in the Bronco League and the Cubs and Dodgers tied for top honors in the Mustang League. The I'ony League Dodgers posted a perfect mark of 20 (I The I )odgers rallied in the final inning to beat the Cubs in a playoff game lor the Mustang League title and the Cubs won a round robin tournament with the Braves and Yankees for first place honors in the Bronco League. During the Bronco League season many teams battled for the lust placecrowu. The Cubs. Yankees and Braves tied for the title, but the Dodgers. Cardinals and lied Sox all bad shots at first place. |
