The city of Roosevelt hosted Pony, Bronco and Mustang Tournaments during the past two weeks and now it is Vernal's turn to host a tournament. The city of Vernal will host the West Zone Bronco Tournament, August 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15. Four games will be played on Wednesday, August 10 in the tournament. tourna-ment. The Northwest Region, which consists of teams from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Montana will take on the North Region team from the San Jose area in northern California, August 10 at 5 p.m. The South Division team from the San Diego area in southern California will battle the host team from Vernal, August 10 at 7:30 p.m. The Coast Region team from the Los Angeles area will have a bye in the first round and will take on the winner of the Vernal-South Divison game, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. Members of the Bronco League Vernal Ver-nal A team are: Roy Goodrich, Chance Bailey, Dustin Henline, Chuck Schiller, Ben Keele, Casey Beynon, Ernie Bolden, Jeff Jackson, John Xielson. The winner of the North West Region and North Region game will take on the winner of the Coast Region-South Region-South Division-Vernal game. August 12 at 7:30 p.m. The championship game will be played August 15 at 5 p.m. Games will be also be played August 11, 12 and 13 at 5 p.m. Eight teams of 11-12 year olds will battle for the Bronco League World Series Championship in St. Joseph, Missouri, August 18-24. Five entries from the continental United States and one each from Hawaii, Mexico and Puerto Rico will play in the double elimination world series for the chance to be crowned the Bronco World Champions. The Pony League World Series will be held in Kennewick, Washington, August 16-23. Pony League Baseball was founded in 1951 with six teams. The first World Series was held in Washington, Pennsylvania in 1952 with San Antonio, Texas, winning the title. Since 1951 the Pony League, for 13 and 14 year old players, has grown to more than 4,000 teams in 1983. Tournament Tour-nament play begins in mid-July and concludes with World Series play. Vernal and Roosevelt are involved in the Pinto League, 7-8; Mustang League, 9-10; Bronco League, 11-12; Pony League, 13-14; and Colt League, 15-16. There are also two other leagues in Pony Baseball, Palomino, 17-18 and Thorobred, 17-21. Pony Baseball has over 209,000 players, nearly 40,000 coaches, 10,000 league officials, 450 field directors and over 2,250 leagues. Forty-six states compete in the Pony Baseball Pro gram as well as teams from Japan, the Phillipines. Puerto Rico, Mexico. Canada and U.S. Military bases throughout the world. Some Pony Baseball graduates, who are major league stars, are: Garry Maddox, Fred Lynn. Ben Oglive. Reg gie Jackson. Dave Parker. Bruce Sutter. Sut-ter. Bruce Kison. Jim Palmer. Robin Young. Florida won the Bronco League World Series title in 1982 and West Covina, California won the Pony League World Series last year for the second time in a row. Puerto Rico won last year's Colt League World Series championship. Many players will be in Vernal for the West Zone Tournament, August 10. 11, 12, 13 and 15 and thus housing for the Bronco Leaguers will be needed. A few years ago Vernal hosted Mustang, Bronco and Mustang League Tournaments and the games were filled fill-ed with excitement and the players extremely ex-tremely talented in the world of baseball slugging. The games should be .even more exciting this year and the players should be better than ever as the West Zone Tournament is the meet just before the World Series. The West Zone Tournament is the first time that a tourney of this importance has ever been held in the city of Vernal. |
