Show Massive street project now under full steam Indicating a major street improvement improve-ment program, Vernal City has resurfaced resur-faced two streets, started to resurface two others and plan to resurface six other streets before fall. Both 8th West Street between Main Street and 5th North and 250 North between bet-ween 8th West and 12th West were resurfaced last month. The two streets were used as comparisons between native hot-mix asphalt and hot-mix surfaces. The native hot-mix surface is heated asphalt from the Uintah County leased asphalt pit on Asphalt Ridge mixed with gravel. The hot-mix surface is oils and tars mixed with gravel and laid down in the same fashion as the native hot-mix. Kenneth Bassett, Vernal City manager, said that both streets, 250 North and 8th West, are excellent streets, but the hot-mix process is preferred because it doesn't allow the impurities that were found in the native hot-mix surface. The hot-mix surface, costs about 11 cents more per square foot than the native hot-mix, but city omciais nave decided to use the hot-mix on major streets in the city. The native hot-mix will be used on less traveled roads. The city is now resurfacing 1st West between Main Street and 1st North, 5th South from Vernal Avenue to 2V4 East is nearly complete and crews are working on Market Drive from 10th West to Dale Avenue. The city plans to resurface 1st North from 10th West to Vernal Avenue, 5th South from 10th East to Vernal Avenue, 2nd South between 1st and 2nd North, 1st South from Vernal Avenue to 5th East and 6th West from 4th South to 5th South. The city plans to complete most of the street projects before September, if the weather doesn't get too cold, said Kay Overson, Vernal City Public Works director. Revenue for the street projects was allocated by the Vernal City Council last spring from last year's surplus funds and money budgeted to the street department this year. About $750,000 was allocated for the street improvement program. |
