Show Eteielk ft bosks Deemed (soft DtrB ytf CoinrDip) By Marylan Bird Express Society Editor A sleeping bag, eating utensils, and change of clothes completes the list of needed items for about seventy Girl Scouts heading out for their annual Girl Scout Day Camp. This year's day camp was different than ones from previous years. This year included all of District Eight: Vernal, Roosevelt, Altamont, and Duchesne. Usually the day camp is held at the Kiwanis Park in Vernal. This year they picked the Bacon Memorial Park near Whiterocks for the location because of it's central location for all of the areas. Girls from all of the different troops in the areas gathered Monday morn- ing and stayed until Tuesday afternoon to learn how to make soap, dye clothes with natural dyes, wash clothes like the pioneer women used to do their laundry with wash boards, learn how to build flint fires, and participate in many other activities. "How often do you think the pioneer women used to wash their clothes?" asked Virginia Seninger, field advisor for the Girl Scouts. ? "IT" .. !1 I J - ? f ' .' ' I .. .. ! . - .A . They were surprised when Mrs. Seninger told them they only on-ly did their laundry once a week and even longer than that if they could. She told them how they would have to go carry water to wash them in and how they used wash boards to scrub them clean on. Each of the Girl Scouts were given the opportunity to experience a little of the pioneer way of life. Fires don't always have to be started with matches. Kathy Hatch taught the girls and demonstrated how to make flint fires. Barb Clarkson taught the girls how to make their own natural dyes from such things as berries, spinach leaves, and onion skins. All of the girls dyed scarves for their heads and hung them up to dry on a homemade clothes. Instead of the usual Girl Scout Day Camp patch, this year they received a necklace. From each of the workshops they attended they were given a different colored bead to go onto on-to the necklace. There were four beads they could receive for them. Kathy Freeman, one of the adult advisors, ad-visors, said day camp is for the girls to learn outdoor and camping skills. They are able to get acquainted with girls from other places in the area. Day camp in previous years used to be a week long activity with the girls returning to their homes each night. According to Mrs. Freeman, "so many of the girls like to spend the night." With many women working in today's society she said it is harder to find adults who have the time and can help with the camp. Kim Zachanas was this year's camp director. She said three-fourths of the girls this year are brownies who are 6, 7, and 8 years old. There are also some juniors who are 9. 10, and 11 years old Two of the older girls recently returwd from their European tour in time to attend and help with the day camp. Leon Roberts from Roosevelt was a special guest. He is a mountain man and talked to the girls and leaders about the life of a mountain man. He showed them his muzzle loader and tepee. The girls were divided up into groups known as units Each unit was given some free time throughout the day and a half This gave them time for various activities from nature hikes In makins renterDieccs. Each unit was required to make some type of centerpiece or bud vnsc for the table decorations for their evening meal. The different units prepared their own foil dinners but met with the other units at one of the pavilhons in the park to eat together. Also, at that time they each put on the skits they had put together as a unit Girl Scout songs and campfire songs filled the air as thev : V.: :: .'. ' ' " i ,:-:.-'' : n - ,. All of the girls were required to bring their own untensils. They got used us-ed to washing their own dishes. The food was covered by the camp registration fee so they didn't have to worry about bringing food with them. According to Mrs. Zacharias. there are certain rules that must be followed. follow-ed. "Always have a buddy that's the most important rule," she said. "They have to have permission to leave to do anything, and they must have a buddy with them." "The second most important rule is to have fun." said Mrs Zacharias. There has to be at least two licensed licens-ed or current first aid card holders at the day camp This year they had at least four. Another thing Mrs Zacharias said they had to do was to notify the sheriff's department to let them know they w ere there m case of an emergency emergen-cy such as a fire breaking out in the area they were in or near & They also had to contact tr-;-. to let them know they were incase in-case someone should get h .
