Flooding brings back memories Seeing the Green River high and flooding places brought back a lot of memories to the 88 year old resident of Jensen, Joe Haslem. "In my lifetime I have seen it high four times: iyU7, 1912, 1950, and now." said Mr. Haslem. "The grand daddy of them all was in 1917." With 'eye balling' it, Mr. Haslem said he thinKS it is 18 inches lower than in 1917, but is still much higher than usual. Mr. Haslem remembers when the first ferry boat was put on the Green River and can show you the exact place it was at. He said it was put up in the late 70's by the Burton who homesteaded in that area. "The river has gotten wider and shallower over the years," said Mr. Haslem. Mr. Haslem has a store of tales to tell about years ago. With the rising waters, it brought back many of his memories. "I grew up as a cowboy. I always worked for big outfits," said Mr. Haslem. He said he always tried to do things the best he could and not just half way. Joe was born in Vernal in 1895 and moved to Jensen that fall and has lived liv-ed there since that time. His family was the biggest cattle owners in the area. They had 1,000 to 1,200 head of cattle they used to take care of. Mr. Haslem is a charter member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame. He has been a member of the American Legion for 64 years. He is a honor member of the Utah Cattlemen's Association and a member of the National Cattlemen's Association. He has been vice president of Utah State University, head of the Public Land Committee of the Colorado Col-orado Cattlemen's Association, and is a life member of the Elks in Colorado. In 1928 he met and married Ruth Perkins in Boston while he was a soldier in the First World War. They had two sons, Sam and Jack. Mr. Haslem can tell you what it was like to be a cowboy, getting his first calf, what a chuckbox is, and many more things about the life of being a cowboy and about living near the Green River. f . .. . .'... i. l ... t ' ' ' Ll.itj THE FIRST ferry boat in this area was located here on the Green River. .J:. ..V ,A. .l. ,l. .a. .i. a i i t i i i i i i i i i i i i " :) A?
