On Tuesday, June 28 a corner of the Smith's Food King parking lot was turned into a health care information and testing place. The Health Care Express Ex-press came to Vernal and was open to the public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The van is the HCA's (Hospital Corporation Cor-poration of American) display which they had at the World's Fair in Knox- ville, Tenn. According to Lynne Gagon, director of nursing services at the Ashley Valley Medical Center, the . van is traveling to every hospital that belongs to the HCA. There are over 300 hospitals which they will visit. The testing and information was available to the public free of charge. According to Mr. Fontaine, there are five education game panels inside the van where you can learn about the heart, circulatory system, brain, respiratory system, and physical fitness and nutrition. Did you wonder what part of the brain your sight or smell comes from? w y y - - ............ - Iff i .L 3 , V" " W- - . j GABRIEL WILLIAMS tries out his knowledge of medical terminology ter-minology with the talking computer. The education game panel has buttons to press for each of the scenes and will light up which part of the brain controls con-trols each one. The panel on the heart shows and tells where the blood goes and how the heart works. There are many other things the panels teach people on the five different areas. Talking computers are also a part of the inside of the van. These offer testing and information. They teach you about self health care, health care for children, primary health care, health care statistics, and one tests your knowledge of medical terminology. Videos have become a popular thing in our present day society. A 15 minute video plays continuously thoughout the day talking about health care and the HCA organization. In addition to the Health Care Express Ex-press van, employees from the Ashley Valley Medical Center were there from different departments. Those interested and concerned about their blood pressure were able to go to the blood pressure screening provided by the nursing services. If you wanted to know what your blood type is, the lab department was there to provide that information with just the prick of a finger. Carol Krag brought Mr. Bones from the physical therapy department to show people how their bones look. She also gave out handouts on how to move so you don't hurt your back. Have you been wanting to start a fitness program but haven't known quite how to begin? Ms. Krag also gave out handouts on how to set up your own fitness program whether it be aerobics or some other type of exercise. Joyce Behler, the Ashley Valley Medical Center's dietician, was on hand to help with dietary information. The van has an emphasis on fitness, so she was there to help people with the dietary part of that program. Weight scales were available for people peo-ple to find out how much they weighed weigh-ed and a chart to see approximately how much they should weigh. The nursing department took care of blood-glucose testing and gave out handouts and literature on diabetes. Pink Ladies are always a special part of the hospital. They had a booth set up where people could ask questions ques-tions about the jobs they do and how the hospital auxiliary works. The whole idea of the Health Care Express was to bring health care and education to the community. Children also found the day filled with fun and excitement through talking talk-ing to and shaking hands with the talking talk-ing robot. The talking robot provided the children with entertainment as well as talking to them about health care. Balloons were also given to the little kids. . . . 1 ! w-J"--.-. . r ' ,P ,- ; .X--: Viz- n -a i"-- ' " - MR.
