Show Uintah County leads state in retail sales gain Uintah County retail sales during the fourth quarter of 1981 showed a gain of 63.2 percent over the same period in 1980, , according to a State' Tax Commission report. The Uintah Basin showed a gain of 54 percent and Roosevelt was second high for communities with a jump in sales of 38 percent. Sales, as determined by sales tax reports filed by businesses, increased during the fourth quarter of 1981 by 12.2 . percent in the state. But an inflationary adjustment of 7.8 percent must be made before real growth can be projected, stated Tax Commission Chief Douglas A. MacDonald. The 1981 change was a welcome sign from the same quarter in 1980 when sales grew only 6.7 percent, not enough to offset inflation MacDonald reported. Utah's energy-rich areas helped to bolster the state-wide average growth by two percentage points. Brigham City topped the list of communities for a growth of 80 percent gain over the year before. Carbon County showed an increase of 45.4 percent and San Juna County gained 19.7 percent. Wasatch Front counties continued to lose their stronghold on retail sales, but the rate of decline slowed somewhat from previous quarterly comparisons, MacDonald noted. 1 |
