Show National briets Bird 'Whoops' it up with human; hatches chick A whooping crane in Baraboo, Wis., one of only about 115 such birds in the world, gave birth to her first chick after performing a mating dance with her human companion in April. The companion, International Crane Foundation director George Archibald, said the bird seemed to form a bond with him in 1975 when he saw it at the Patuxent Wildlife Research in Maryland. The bird, named Tex, was inseminated with the help of a Patuxent researcher and laid an egg May 3. Other eggs were laid with the help of artificial insemination, in-semination, but none hatched. The five-inch-high chick was named "Gee-Whiz" after the man who inseminated the mother, Dr. George Gee. |
