Show Pet week stresses responsibilities Reminding Utah residents about responsible pet ownership is the emphasis of National Pet Week, an observance sponsored by the Utah Veterinary Medical Association during May 3-7. "This special event is a time when area veteranarians encourage pet owners to obey local animal control laws, to furnish pets with proper food and shelter, and to provide health care," said Dr. David G. Denkers, president. Dr. Denkers points out that too many people, dogs and cats are lovable companions. To others, however, these pets may become a nuisance if they are allowed to roam. "Responsible owners do not allow dogs to bark excessively, soil neighbor's lawns or gardens, or get into neighbor's garbage," Dr. Denkers emphasizes. Because unwanted litters may sometimes become a community burden, surgical sterilization of pets should be discussed with a veterinarian. Annual vaccinations against rabies and other diseases, internal and external parasite control, and other preventive health measures are also important. Dr. Denkers observes that pet owners have to invest hard work, time and patience to care responsibly for an animal. The return is a pet that provides companionship, joins in recreation, and gives love and affection. |
