Juniors nef "flstf in hoop invitteattioneaS Seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth graders were defeated by their teacher, Karen Ward and her Big O teammates in the first game in the Uintah Basin Women's Invitational, 31 to 26, but the juniors taught their teacher, Ward and the rest of the Big O Tire cagers a lesson in basketball due to a 42 to 29 victory in the second title game, Saturday in Roosevelt at Union High School. Shanna Draper, 7th grader; Kathy Nielsen, Suzanne Nielsen, 8th graders; Kellie Brown, 9th grader and Sherry and Shirley Nielsen, 10th graders, were coached by Ward at Roosevelt Junior High. The Juniors enjoyed point paradise as they jumped out to a 21-0 lead before Big O, which had gone to no-point Hades, scored its first points of the game on a field goal by LaJean Rasmussen with 3:20 left in the first half. A 2-0 lead was nabbed by the Juniors when Brown scored a field goal and six straight points on two field goals and two free throws gave the Juniors an 8-0 lead. Suzanne Nielsen went to work as she poured in five points for a 13-0 advantage. Brown put in a two-pointer and Kathy Nielsen scored three points on a field goal and free throw for an 18-0 lead. Rasmussen's basket cut the Juniors' lead to 19 points at 21-2. Big O outscored the Juniors , 4 to 3, but a 26 to 6 lead was owned by the Juniors at the end of the first half. A field goal by Brown gave the Juniors a 22 point lead of 28-6 early in the second half. Mary Bird and Joan Goodrich scored baskets to cut the Junior lead to 18 points at 28-10. Suzanne Nielsen and Kathy Nielsen pumped in shots for a 20 point lead, but the lead was reduced to 16 points on free throws by Cindy Carlson and a field goal by Goodrich. The Juniors put in two more field goals for a 20 point lead of 36-16. Big O outscored the Juniors, 9-2, to cut the lead to 13 points, but the Juniors scored four more points for a 42-29 win. Suzanne Nielsen was the top scorer at 13 points on five field goals and three free throws. Also scoring counters were Shirley Nielsen, 9; Brown, 7; Shanna Draper, 6; Kathy Nielsen; 5 and Sherry Nielsen, 2. Carlson was the top scorer for Big O at 11 points. Also scoring points were Goodrich, 8; Ward, 4; Nelson, 2; Bird, 2 and Rasmussen, 2. The game was tied at 12-12 at the end of the first half of the first title contest and Big O emerged as the winner in the second half, 31-26. Goodrich was the top scorer for Big O at 15 points and Bird put in eight counters. Carlson put in six points and Ward tossed in two counters. Suzanne Nielsen and Brown were the number one scorers for the Juniors at six points and Kathy Nielsen and Shirley Nielsen put in five counters. Sherry Nielsen and Draper tossed in two points. Twin sisters, Sherry and Shirley Nielsen and sister Kathy Nielsen and cousin Suzanne Nielsen plus Draper and Brown were coached by Ward at Roosevelt Junior High, but this time around Ward was on the opposing team's side. "It's kind of different. You take advice from someone else and you play against someone who coached you at the junior high," said Suzanne Nielsen. Suzanne's mother remarked, "Miss Ward didn't lose either way. It was her girls who won the title." |
