Show The largest blast ever made on the Marquette, Mich, iron range was fired recently in the Winthrop open pit. The amount of ore brough down from the east side of the pit is estimated at from 10,000 to 13,000 tons. Previous to the blast proper, 300 pounds of giant powder were exployed to loosen the ground. This did its work splendidly. Some of toe cracks in the ore were two inches wide, while there were many smaller ones. Immediately back of the larger crack about forty feet from the end ofthe hanging, a large hole, thirty-five thirty-five feet in deph, had been drilled. Over half a ton of black powder was put into this hole. When the blast went off the ore ahead and forty feet on eitner side of the hole tumbled 'over into thehugepit. The Winthrop open pit is a mammouth affair. It is about 150 feet in depth and 100 feet long by 400 feet wide. The entire east side is solid ore, as is also a portion of the south side. The bottom is also in ore, and the deposit can only be conjectured. Mining-Revew. |
