Show Power Flows Through Hew UPSL Line to Four Corners Area Utah Power & Light Co. has charged tho ontiro 370-mile 370-mile Icnglh or ils 3-15,000-volt transmission line spanning span-ning the area from Sal': Lake City to (he Pour Corners Cor-ners area in New Mexico. The charging of tho linn was done in two stages; first the section be. ween Camp Williams just south of Sa.lt Lute City and Huntington Hunt-ington Canyon in Emery County; second, the section hot ween Huntington Canyon Can-yon and tho utilities in Tie. Four Corners area near Farmington, New Mexico. Tllle 370mile transmission transmis-sion line is the highest voltage volt-age power line in Utah and Iwill be capable of delivering deliver-ing enough electricity to aipply the needs of a city of sonic 500,000 people. The line was built to increase service reliability and bring additional economical power pow-er to all efectric users. The transmission line was ibegun in the spring of 1970. Before construction, the route of tho line was scru-t.inil'.ed scru-t.inil'.ed to insure that it would met't the latest stan- . ylards of environmental compatibility. In some instances in-stances the line was rerouted. re-routed. This was the case in several spots in Central Utah whei'e by adding a short distance to the line's overall length, UP&L was able to hide the poles from view or preserve the aesthetic aesth-etic appeairanco of forests. The line was also rerouted rerout-ed in several spots on the Navajo and Ute reservations reserva-tions in the Four Corners area. UP&L hired a team 'sure that no Indian ruins would lie disturbed by actual ac-tual placement of poles or by construction crews and bheir equipment. The areh-eologists areh-eologists found several concentrations con-centrations of artifacts and the lino's right-of-way was iiclocated around these areas. ar-eas. The line also was routed to skirt state parks and national na-tional park and monument lands. , n.atJi E. A. Hunter, UP&L president, pres-ident, said the line will provide pro-vide transmission for power pow-er exchange with adjacent electric systems, and in 1974, when the Huntington Canyon plant first unit will be completed, it will deliver deliv-er power from this Emery County steam-electric generating gen-erating station. Huntington 'Canyon plant's first unit will provide 430,000 kilowatts kilo-watts capability addition to the Utah Power system. Utah Power & Light has ibeen a pioneer in interconnecting intercon-necting and pooling its facilities fac-ilities with neighboring utilities. ut-ilities. In 1927, it built a 138,000-volt line to connect "with Idaho Power Co. Today To-day UP&L high voltage ar teries connect with four large power pools, embracing embrac-ing major electric systems' in the 11 western states 'having a total capacity of over 50 million kilowatts. This region is interconnected interconnect-ed to electric systems in eastern United States. This pooling arrangement imakes it possible to install in-stall larger, more efficient generating units than individual in-dividual companies might otherwise justify, - since part of the output can be available to other systems. Thus, large amounts of llower can be exchanged between the companies to provide the most economical econom-ical power generation over an entire area. |
