Show DEAR SAM: Reading your editorial in last week's paper sort of hit the nail on the head on my recent thoughts of past celebrations cel-ebrations in "the good old days" both here and in Castle Valley and Castle-ton Castle-ton especially. During the 1920's fabulous fabul-ous celebrations were given giv-en in Castleton for the 4lh ,as well as for the 24th. Families residing in Castle Valley and Castleton prepared pre-pared delicious salads, eakes, pies, and other picnic pic-nic goodies for the many guests who came to Castle-(t;on Castle-(t;on for the two or three day celebration. Long tables tab-les were set out in the old Findl'ey Grove of trees near the present Hoffman ranch. Barrels of home-made lemonade lem-onade (sometimes colored pink) were served cooled by snow brought down Ifrom Miner's Basin and other spots on the LaSal mountains. Freezers of ice .. cream were also made for the youngsters. Races were held in the anain street of Castleton with Mrs. Essie White and Mrs. Helen Winbourn rid-, ing- bareback in fierce competition. com-petition. Other noted horse men came from LaSai (Chet Smith for one), from the Pace - Brothers Ranch, .and from all over the prea.'. Races for the children were held first , and each child got a nickle win or ; lose. This also took place in Moab Mo-ab during the 4th and 24th Celebrations. The recent death of Ches ter A. .Wright who died in California at 83 years, reminded re-minded me that he is one of the last musicians who furnished music for thj. celebrations in Cas'ileton. He was usually accompanied accompani-ed on the violin by the late Lynn Pat'e. Another older fiddler was the late Mark Walker, father of V. P. Walker, and the late Lester Walker. The Walkers furn-ish'ed furn-ish'ed the music for many wonderful dances that were held in the little red school house in Castleton for many years. We owe a tribute to the many old timers who have recently passed away who left us a heritage that they hoped would never pass laway! They loved to celebrate cele-brate the Nation's birthday as well as the 24th of July which is Utah's birthday coming, up in the next few iwdaks. Lest we forget! Sincerely Rosalie Robertson. |
