First Quarter Thrust Sets Stage for Victory By Ernie Milner Taking advantage of a strong offensive thrust during the first quarter, the Moab Red Devils continued on their winning win-ning ways by defeating the Green River Pirates 38-0 Fridav. Playing before a small crowd on Friday the 13th, the Devils used nearly all members of the team. The only ones who didn't see action were injured players. Starting off strong, the Red Devils were led to their first TD by a fine jump pass from Gene Roberts to Vinnie Cam-berlango, Cam-berlango, and followed by a run into the end zone by fullback Pete Davis. Steve Stout added the extra point to make the score 7-0 with 8:35 to go in the first quarter. quar-ter. Roberts, returning to action ac-tion after a two week layoff due to an injury, aided the Devil offensive unit and proved pro-ved that he was ready to resume active play. Steve Wyatt, senior quarterback quar-terback and defensive back, started the next score in the form of a beautiful runback of a Green River punt. Taking Tak-ing the ball on his own 35, Wyatt waited for blocking and followed it until he could break clear and go into the end zone. The play covered 65 yards an d put the Devils ahead 14-0 with the addition of Stout's kick for the extra point. The Moab defensive unit was strong all night with the addition of many younger young-er members of the team. Coaches Glen Richeson, Del Ford and Ward Curtis made many substitutions all during the gamj and relied on the second units to carry the fight to the game but out-manned out-manned Pirates. The next score came on a pass to Stout as he put the Devils even farther ahead m with a point after. Following Follow-ing a good pass to Kevin Hansen, Stout took the ball on a play that covered 40 yards for the score that made the tally 21-0 with 3:17 left to go in the first quarter The second quarter w,t played in the middle of til field as it was a duel 0 : '' the defensive units of the J " teams. The Devils used the second and thirt units on o ' fense and defense and thev gained some valuable exper : ience. Modesto, Robson Ho" : lyoak and many others were in the game for the most part of the contest and did a very good job. Stout also converted one field goal during du-ring the evening to make his personal score 14 points. The evening was not over as the fans were treated to some finj play. Shortly after 1 the start of the second half Mike Walterschied recovered a bad snap from the center to score a TD, and later in the game intercepted a pass on the Devil 5 yard line and picked up blockers, cut back and forth across' the field to return the ball 95 yards and another touchdown The defensive unit was pow- n erful all night and Green Ri- 1 ver was held to less than '5 first downs during the entire en-tire game. |
