These students may then be taken to New Horizons Hori-zons for periods of one hour per day to provide those relationships re-lationships which are more conducive to building the study stu-dy habits necessary in the conventional school system. Programs for students with selected disabilities are defined de-fined through testing and e-valuation e-valuation and are then fitted into the curriculum at the various schools, These various schools, These programs pro-grams are formulated following fol-lowing discussions with teachers and others who work with the students each day and are fitted to the needs of each .student. Those students with multiple multi-ple disabilities remain at New Horizons through out the entire en-tire day, and are exposed to situations which will help them cope with everyday experiences. ex-periences. They are each allowed al-lowed to progress on their own academic level and then work with groups toward understanding un-derstanding the multiple situations encountered in their life outside school. It is hoped that under the new system, potential problems prob-lems may be spotted at an early age so that programs for correction of the special learning disabilities may be formulated. Coordinator for the program at New Horizons this year is Angela Wanielista, who is aided by Rhea Gramlich. Students Stu-dents at the center also receive re-ceive some physical therapy aids from RPT Judy Peters, , who visits the center at least once a week to prescribe therapy the-rapy for individual problems The instructors then, work with the students during the week on their special physical phy-sical needs. ' Through coordination of the programs offered at -New Horizons Ho-rizons with problems recognized recog-nized t '.rough testing at" the other schools, it is felt by local faculty members that more students can be reached and their problems corrected so that they may function adequately in situations outside out-side the classroom. |
