Show Hanksville News. . . By Barbara Ekker Mrs. and Mrs. Glen P. Johnson will be greeting greet-ing friends in Hanksville the evening of April 14 to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Glen and Merintha Johnson John-son were married April 10th, 1923 at Price, Utah and on July 23 solomen-ized solomen-ized at the Manti Temple. Tem-ple. Glen was born Nov. 29th 1896 at Cleveland, Utah, the son of John Peter and Dosena Olson Johnson. He served ser-ved his country in World War I where he was wounded. He wasHanks-ville's wasHanks-ville's first bishop in 1935. He has served as Stake Missionary. High Councilman. Stake Sunday Sun-day School Board in Green River, counseler to Bishop Bernes Jackson. Jack-son. Presently he is Hanksville Ward's High Priest Leader and President Pres-ident of the Hanksville Canal Co. Merintha is the oldest daughter of Sixtus Ellis and Lovisa Cox Johnson and was born in Tropic, Utah on Dec. 25. 1903. "She has been very active in church activities and served a s Hanksville Ward's clerk when her husband was bishop. She has been Relief Society President, a counseler and secretary, as well as a visiting teacher for 40 years. Merintha is a renowned cook and has operated and managed restaurants here as well as in Green River. During Glen and Mer-intha's Mer-intha's fifty years of togetherness, to-getherness, they have lived in Carbon. Emery and Wayne counties, having lived in Hanksville Hanks-ville since 1930. They served together in the Northern States Mission in Chicago in 1963. They have been blessed with nine children. Joann. their second daughter, passed away in 1940 follow ing a school picnic accident. Their children are Gordon Kent. Hanksville: Hanks-ville: Mrs. Bernes Jackson Jack-son (Nona Bee) of Salt Lake; John Merrill, Hanksville: Glen Dale, Green River, Mrs. (Mary Lee) Jamie Olney, Moab: Mrs. John (Merintha (Mer-intha Ann) Petric. Vernal: Ver-nal: Mrs. Kay (Dosena June) Erickson. Vanco-ver. Vanco-ver. Washington: and Louis Ellis Johnson. Hayburn. Idaho. They have 42 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. An open house will be held in their honor hon-or at Hanksville on the 14th. Mrs. Harriet Noys. Hanksville Postmaster, attended a Section Center Cen-ter meeting in Salina this past weekend followed foll-owed by a banquet. Bob Strong. Mgr. was guest speaker. Mrs. Noyes joined Mrs. Elinore Al-brecht. Al-brecht. Bicknell Postmaster. Post-master. Irene Peterson, Teasdale postmaster, and Deila Chappel. Fremont Fre-mont postmaster for the trip to Salina. Mr. and Mrs. Joy Rob-ison. Rob-ison. Oakridge. Oregon have been visiting relation rel-ation and friends here and in Cleveland and Bicknell. Utah the past week along with Mrs. Robison's sister who joined them in Las Vegas. Mrs. Edna Rob-ison. Rob-ison. Joy's wife, is the sister of Mr. Glen P. Johnson of here and Elmer Johnson of Bicknell. Bick-nell. Joy visited his sister. sis-ter. Mrs. Ruth Nielson in Green River and broth bro-th e r. Guy Robison of here, as well as a sister. Lila Silva of Ogden. Mrs. RaeLene Ekker will join her parents, the W.L. Hills of Monroe, Mon-roe, this week for a trip to Denver to visit Mr. and Mrs. Drew Mor-an Mor-an before their departure depart-ure for Maryland. La Vor Wells has been ' in Hanksville the past week from his home in I Kirtland. Arizona. He is still operating a drilling I company there following a short stay in Haymer, I Idaho with his parents, , Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wells ' who recently moved there from Hanksville. Mrs. Ruth Regan has been visiting her daugh-t daugh-t ter, Ann Leird and family fam-ily from her home in i California. Mrs. Regan's Reg-an's granddaughter. Je- neil. accompanied her from California and will remain here for a weeks visit at the Leirds. Mr. and Mrs. TedBon-nema TedBon-nema returned to their home at Ft. Collins, Colorado Co-lorado after spending 2 weeks here sightseeing and fishing. The Bon-nema's Bon-nema's leave their trailer trail-er home here year around so they can slip away from his contracting contract-ing job on free days. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Blackburn. Emery, have taken their new baby girl home from the Price hospital and were joined by grandmother, Mrs. Flora Ekker who'll stay-in stay-in Emery for a week. The Blackburns have 2 older children. Trovand Kelli. Arthur and A.C. Ekker spent Friday moving bulls back to the Roost that had been wintered here at the Johns ranch. A.C. went on to Hite to meet a Canyonlands Expedition Ex-pedition River trip arriving ar-riving there after putting put-ting in their boats at Green River. Ron Smith and Joe Baker were among the guides. A wedding reception will be held April 6th for Mr. and Mrs. Terry Nielson following their wedding at the Richfield fifth W ard. Mrs. Nielson is the former. Desiree Ekker. daughter of Mrs. Gwenn Mattingly. Richfield Rich-field and Mr. Everett Ekker. Blanding. Grandparents Grand-parents are Mr. and Mrs. Reed Ekker. Salt Lake and Mr. and Mrs. Riter Ekker. Hanksville. Neva Fay, Rita Ann. and Sybil F.kker. teenage teen-age daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse F.kker have been selected to be finalists fin-alists in the 1973 Miss Utah Teen-Ager Pagent to be held June 15. 16. 17. 1973 at the Ramada Inn. Salt Lake City. Utah. The Miss Utah Teen-Ager Teen-Ager Pagent is the official of-ficial state preliminary to the Miss National Teen-Ager Pagent held in Atlanta. Ga. Sept. 1. There will be contestants con-testants from all over the state competing for the title of Miss Utah Teen-Ager. The reigning reign-ing Miss Nation Teen-Ager Teen-Ager is Sharon McLarty of Amory. Mississippi. Contestants will be judged on scholastic achievement, leadership, leader-ship, poise, personality, and beauty. There is no swimsuit competition. Each contestant will recite re-cite their own essay on the subject, "What's Right About America." Neva is 17 and a junior student at Wayne High School in Bicknell where she holds the office of Pep Club secretary, class historian. Recently Recent-ly appeared in the musical musi-cal "Sound of Music" and competed in the regional re-gional choral meet at Richfield where the group took first place and will compete for state honors this week in Salt Lake City. ' Rita is 16, a sophomore sopho-more student at Wayne High School. She is a junior varist.v cheerleader, cheer-leader, member of the foreign language club, science club and a former form-er class officer. Sybil is 15 and freshman fresh-man class president at Wayne High School. Is active in MIA dramatic and choral groups with her older sisters and is an assistant weather ob- server at the Hanksville stations. The three girls were notified of their honor by Mrs. Fredda Odom, Executive State Director, Direct-or, Miss Utah Teen-Ager Teen-Ager Pagent. Salt Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Auggie Nicolas. Montrose. Colorado, Col-orado, and former Hanksville residents, are announcing the arrival ar-rival of a daughter, Claudette. The Nicholas are former owners of the Fairview Ranch south of Hanksville and are presently operating in the Colorado area with their sheep. The Nicolas have a two year old son. Jason. Mr. and Mrs. La Naie Albrecht returned home this week from Texas where they'd delivered horses for Mr. Glen-don Glen-don Johnson. Mr. Johnson John-son is the new owner of the Caryle Baker Ranch in the Cathedral Valley area. Primary conference was held Sunday under the direction of Mrs. Marilyn Sellers. President. Presi-dent. Mrs. Bertha Robison. Robi-son. Mrs. Charlene Shirley, and Elaine Johnson assisted with the affair. The Hanksville Youth MIA will participate in the Stake Road Show Tuesday in Loa The Hanksville group is under the direction of Mrs. Marilyn Sellers, Mrs. Jeannine Hunt, and Mrs. Shirley Jackson. They They will present "On the Scene" news reporting with M rs. Barbara Ekker as MC. with each 'scene' being portrayed by the youth. Mrs. Paula Howland has been visiting her sister. Mrs. Carolyn Hatch and family from her Green River home. They returned Friday to Green River to see their sister. Connie Reay in the school musical. "Damn Yankee." Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Fkker and Sandy San-stead San-stead flew to Las Vegas over the weekend on business. bus-iness. Mr. Sanstcad recently re-cently purchased the James L. Johns ranch north of Hanksville on the Dirty Devil. Mrs. Edna Robison and Mrs. Jesse Ekker and daughters attended the school musical in Green River Friday night as Mrs. Robison's grandson, Niel Ekker was the male lead. The younger girls attended Mel's 17th birthday surprise sur-prise party follow ing the performance. Mrs. Ella Cheskaty underwent major surgery sur-gery in El Cajon, Calif, last week. She is the mother-in-law of Mrs. Julia Ekker Cheskaty. Mrs. Audrey Ziekafoos will begin operating the cafe west of the Phillips 66 station formerly operated op-erated bv her aunt, M rs. Edith Miller. |
