Show Sudden infant death syndrome workshop scheduled for Moab Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Syn-drome will claim the lives of 40 to 60 infants each year in Utah. In Grand and San Juan Counties it will claim 2. It kills 1 out of every 350 live births with the incidence peaking at age 2 to 4 months. It is the cause of from 8,000 to 10,000 infant deaths nationwide annually. an-nually. The "why of it all" has not yet been proven by modern medicine. This mysterious occurance is more commonly known as "crib death" or "cot Hpsth." These names have been used because it usually happens at night while the infant is sleeping. In 1974 the President signed the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Act which authorized authoriz-ed projects over the U. S. for education, research, and collection col-lection of data relating to the causes of the syndrome and counseling of affected families. famil-ies. In 1975 Utah became a project site and a SIDS Core Team was developed. On Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 8:30 a.m. a SIDS Workshop will be presented by this team in the City Council Chambers in Moab. It will bejresented for people directly affected by its impact: parents, emergency medical teams, hospital emergency emer-gency personnel, hospital nurses, nur-ses, physicians, public health nurses, police, morticians, religious and lay groups. It also affects grandparents, siblings, neighbors and friends. After the completion of the workshop, hopefully the parti-pants parti-pants will be able to grasp and relate the pertinent facts about SIDS, have a general understanding under-standing of normal grief reactions and the grief process, pro-cess, and be able to recognize how the state program operates. oper-ates.
