Utah State Highway 95, designated by Governor Calvin Cal-vin Rampton in 1976 as Utah's Bicentennial Highway, stretches 133 miles (214 kilometers) kilo-meters) between Blanding and Hanksville. The highway provides access to Natural Bridges National Monument and Lake Powell, with the Colorado Rjve? Bridge spanning spann-ing the river near the north end of the lake. The design of Highway 95 represents outstanding effort for several reasons, one of which is the highway design's careful consideration of esthetic esthe-tic values. The design of the road minimized the visual impact and attempted to make the road blend in with the rugged terrain as much as possible. Two of the bridges along the route have received special spe-cial recognition from the American Am-erican Institute of Steel Construction, Con-struction, an important trade organization in the construction construc-tion industry. The White Canyon Bridge, near Natural Bridges National Monument, was commended by the Institute as the most beautiful bridge in its class opened for traffic in 1965. The Colorado River Bridge was named as the most beautiful long-span bridge opened in 1966. The highway, which took a quarter of a century and some $20 million to complete, was finished in 1976. |
