All trap' must have name and adjress attached or imprinted thereon, coyote and fox traps must have 316 inch spacers (clearance), and traps must be checked at least every 72 hours. Baiting is illegal since it encourages hawks and eagle into traps. gkc January is the Cisco fisherman's fisher-man's month. Usually between be-tween the 9th and the 15th the annual Cisco run begins. The cisco is a small fish (6-8 inches) found in few places. It migrates to shallow water for breeding purposes during the colder months. Schools of the Cisco entice fishermen armed with dip nets into the cold shallows of Bear Lake. Enthusiasts can call the "Bird" line (532-BIRD) for day to day updates on the Cisco run. -gkc- The tire chain trick published publish-ed in January's issue of Sports Afield can save you a lot of work when putting on your tire chains: "A piece of 2 x 6-inch lumber can take a lot of the pain and strain out of putting on tire chains. Begin by spreading the chains out flat, either in front of the tiie or behind it. Then place the block of wood between the center links, making sure it isn't on top of any part of the chain. Now, drive over the chains until the tire is squarely square-ly on the block. This gives you all the slack possible and is almost as effective as taking a tire off to put on the chains. To take off the chains, simply reverse the process." gkc During the winter our local deer migrate to lower elevations eleva-tions and tend to cluster more, due to the breeding season. Big bucks also lose a lot of fears this time of year. Although hunting season is over, locals can still hunt deer with the camera or binoculars. If you're a big buck fan, here are a few tips on estimating estimat-ing antler size on the deer. Tip to tip ear measurements measure-ments on an alert mule deer may be 18 to 20 inches, antlers that are well outside the tip of the ear are big bucks. When viewing a running buck, remember re-member the average thickness thick-ness of a mule deer's body is 17 inches thick, antlers showing show-ing three or four inches on either side will measure about 26 inches. |
