Show Off-road vehicle plan coming next month It was announced late last week that the Bureau of Land Management's proposal for limiting limit-ing off-road vehicles will be released next month, with parts of four Western states designated as the main targets for restrictions. Western Arizona, Southern Nevada, Central Utah and parts of Alaska are top priority for protection under the upcoming BLM rules, it was stated by Larry Young, an outdoor recreation planner with the agency. The 5-year old rules that govern public land under BLM control in Southern California will be models for the rules that will cover other BLM controlled land, Young stated. In the desert east of Los Angeles, which Young called "America's hottest . ORV off-road vehicle area," vehicles are banned from 6 per cent of the area, they are allowed on another 6 per cent and they are restricted to existing roadways on the rest of the land: A year ago, shortly after the Carter administration took over in Washington, restrictive rules on off-road vehicles were rumored. A storm of protest followed the rumors, and release of the proposed rules was postponed. Observers in Southeastern Utah, where off-road vehicles are part of life, are awaiting the release of the new rules with some anxiety. |
