Show Letter Carriers Donate To Luna Disease Fund More than $24,000 donated by the National Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary has been added to a nationwide pooled fund for lung disease research reported Mrs. LaVern W. Parmley, president of the Utah Lung Association. The speical contributions will by used for medical research aimed at preventing lung disease, according to Donald A. Young, M.D., Medical Director of the American Ameri-can Lung Association. Dr. Young accepted the contributions contribu-tions on behalf of the nation's Christmas Seal workers at the rural letter carriers convention in San Antonio, Texas. The Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary of Utah under the direction of Mrs. R. T. Jones of Corinne, Utah, contributed to the fund. According to Mrs. Janet Wilford, Logan, who is treasurer of the organization, the funds were raised by selling hand crafted items at a bazaar. "Although most people think of the goal of medical research as improved treatment, treat-ment, research also can be prevention," Mrs. Parmley said. As examples, she described descri-bed three investigations among those supported by the $260,000 nation-wide research fund to which the letter carriers auxiliary girt has been added: 1. A study of surfactant, the substance that gives the lungs elasticity and which is missing in infants with .respiratory distress syndrome. The researcher, re-searcher, Sikander L. Katyal, Ph.D., University of Pittsburg School of Medicine, seeks more information about how surfactant is produced. Such knowledge could prevent this often-fatal infant lung disease. 2.
