K I Congratulations are in order following Tuesday's big city election in Moab, and the heartiest should go to Moab City's I electorate, who turned out in near-record numbers to cast their I ballots when many predicted a miserably low voter turnout. I We wish the three victors all the success in the world In carrying out their new duties. I Harold Jacobs, a veteran of the Council Chamber, was given ' the vote of confidence he deserves for all the work he has involved in the past few years as a Councilman. Jake not only , vocally participates in Council meetings, he spends near full-time trouble-shooting city projects, all the way from broken water mains to flood control projects. Dixie Barker will make a fine addition to the Council. She has distinguished herself in two years as President of the Chamber of Commerce, and has many other credits to add to that service. Dixie's level-headed approach to matters will make her a valuable asset to the Council. I I had the privilege of serving for a number of years on another public board with the third victor, Marj Tomsic, and can vouch for her keen insight, concern and openness. The new Council, with these three aboard, should be a good one to watch. I'm going to continue calling them "Councilman," however, despite a note tacked to my front door this week crossing out that word in last week's headline and replacing it with "Councilwomen." I refuse to use the term "Chairwoman," and the term "Chairperson" makes me even sicker. Calling a City Councilman a City Councilman is no different, in my mind, than calling a Board Member a Board Member. And I'm pretty sure the ladies will agree. -sjt- I was glad to see neighboring San Juan County voters approve a multi-million dollar bond issue to construct two new high schools on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Having reviewed the problems of busing students over the longest routes in the nation, there is no question that the schools are needed. The fact that the courts have already said they must be built was, of course, a complicating factor. The vote Tuesday merely gave the County the wherewithal! to do the job. -sjt- Some time ago, members of the Moab Rotary Club asked the Bureau of Land Management to provide some signs to be placed at popular beach areas near Moab along the Colorado River warning persons about the dangers of the stream, and urging parents not to let their children play in the water unattended. The request, which was accepted positively by the Bureau, came as a result of almost annual drownings of children whose parents, mostly transients and passers-through, thought the peaceful-looking river would be a nice place for the kids to cool off. Five of the signs were placed at prominent locations by Rotarians after they were constructed at considerable cost by the BLM. Now, thanks to some thoughtless prankster, there are only three. Someone has stolen two of the signs, and probably has them prominently displayed on a bedroom wall. The signs and more like them are sorely needed. And they're needed along the Colorado River, not In some collection of trophies. If it was a lot of fun stealing the important signs from their locations, it should be just as much fun to sneak them back Into the BLM yard near the Grand Valley Cemetery. I hope that after thinking about it, the responsible party will attempt to do just that. ' . T--.. - .... -. f 1 ! ' i ' . .V " v.- J |
