I he I'OS 1' ri'pmt shows that l.'INH certified peace officers i the state took part in training programs designed to increase their abilities in skills ami proficiency us peace officers in the State of Utah. Many of (he training sessions sess-ions completed were done on voluntary time, some of which wus directed toward college degrees. For the most part, however, the training courses were those the officers selected select-ed to give them current information and techniques to combat the rising crime rate. All ollieers are now required by law to take 40 hours of training a year. 1 he Grand County Sheriffs Office logged 122 hours training during the year. Sheriff W. H. Bowman tixik 30 hours of training and Deputy Sheriff Carl Davis completed 92 hours of training. The Moab City Police Department totaled 424 hours of training among its 6 members. The ollieers and their hours of training were as follows: Chief of Police Mel Dalton, HO; llient Duncan, HI; Lynn 1all, 24; I'.ugene Miglo-ri, Miglo-ri, (iH; Larry Rowley, (H; and Valdon Teeples, 100. In addition to figures furnished furn-ished by POST, 1all, a new officer with the department coming on Mid-year, attended u 5-day linger print school recently. A 2-day Firearms school was held for peace officers in this area Nov. 5 and (, and an FBI sponsored school will be held in Moab Nov. 13 centering on "white collar" crime, such as embezzlement, forgery, etc. Bankers in the area have been invited to utlend this special school. During the past fiscal year POST sponsored 656 training hours in 8 training regions throughout the state including specialized courses given at the centralized Utah Law Fnforcement Academy lo the executives in law enforcement as well as those officers at a command supervision level. Some of the more specialized special-ized training classes held for the peace officers included seminars on the new stale criminal code, aspects of transient crime prevention, officers survival, cattle rustling, rustl-ing, civil liability and juvenile specialist training. |
