Show ;Area Commissioners Want a -Soy.' -;ln: future Planning fer Parks An opportunity for discussion dis-cussion was afforded the commissioners of Garfield, Grand, Kane, San Juan and Wayne counties at the Utah State Assn. of Counties Coun-ties convention last week, resulting in conceited, united uni-ted action on the Capitol (Reef, Arches and Glen Canyon National Recreation Recrea-tion issues. Following the exchange of ideas several letters voicing the united protests of the counties were sent, to detail the position of the commissioners. Letters were sent to Sen. Frank E; Moss, ' Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, Rep. Sherman P. Lloyd and Rep. Gunn McKay Mc-Kay seeking cooperation of the congressional delegation dele-gation in seeing that area residents have a say in new bills introduced thia session of Congress. Signed by Marion H. Hazleton, Chairman, San Juan County Commission, and James W. Yardley, Chairman, Garfield County Coun-ty Commission, the positions posi-tions set forth in the letter let-ter are, in part, as follows: "The Commissioners of the involved Counties have joined together in a common com-mon cause concerning these matters and as you knew we, and the overwhelming over-whelming majority of the citizens in these areas, are in favor of National Park status for Arches and Capitol Ca-pitol Reef but wish the acreage to be greatly reduced. re-duced. We also favor creation cre-ation of Glen Canyon National Na-tional Recreation Area but with the Park Service managing ma-naging only the water, immediate shoreline, and concession areas, with the balance be'ng managed under multiple use principles princi-ples by the ELM. We feel very strongly that mandatory manda-tory language-be used -to provide for this and that 'Highway, pipeline and utility line corridors' be positively provided ' for. In .addition, we ask that certain cer-tain lands be set aside near development areas for permanent community development." The letter requested a meeting with congressional congression-al delegates prior to the filial draft "and submission-of submission-of any bills pertaining to the areas. On the lack of planning involvement given local people, the letter said, "It seems that the Sierra Club, the Friends of the Earth, Californians, New Yorkers, and the Park Service Ser-vice have had more say in the past concerning our resources and indeed, our . back yard, than the people who pioneered this land, many of whom still live here." |
