How about "annihilation," or "imperceptible"? These words are part of a list Grand County students are studying to prepare for school district spelling bees, to be held in the next two weeks. Students in the fourth through eighth grades at Southeast and Helen M. Knight Elemen-taries Elemen-taries and the Middle School are eligible to participate. Said Southeast Principal Duane Wim-mer, Wim-mer, two winners will be determined in each school by March 18, and these six students will compete against each other in a district spelling bee the last week of the month. This will be held in Star Hall with the general public encouraged to attend. The district winner will go to region, Grand, Emery, Carbon and San Juan Counties, on April 18. In preparation for this a teacher tutor will be assigned to coach the top Grand County speller, and if this student spells his way to the top at the region level, he will go on to the state meet in Salt Lake April 26-27. The national spelling bee will be held in June. The Deseret News is sponsoring the spelling bees statewide, in cooperation with the Utah Education Association, State PTA, State Board of Education and local boards of education. This is the first year any of the schools in the 4-county region have participated in this program, however Wimmer expressed confidence in the ability of local students to compete with students from the metropolitan areas of the state. |
