Show Mountain Road Closure Hearing Set in LaSal A public hearing w ill be held in LaSal Aug. 5 on the proposed closing of four sections of road, two of w hich would cut off access to Dark Canyon. Beaver and Medicine Lakes from the south. The easiest route to these lakes is through the town of LaSal. turning left several miles beyond at cither Two Mile Road or Ranger Station Road (the sawmill), San Juan county roads 154 and 124 respectively. These roads traverse tra-verse property belonging to Hardy Redd before entering the LaSal National Forest. The petition asks that one mile of each of these roads be closed. According to San Juan Road Clerk Lynn Adams, the roads had been closed for a period ot time, but were re-opened by county crews since closure of public roads, even across private lands, is not legal without a public hearing. If a decision is made to close these roads, access to the lakes will be possible only over LaSal Pass, which is considered consider-ed an extremely rough four wheel drive road; through Geyser Pass, another rough road, or througn ioioraao. Petitions to close 3 miles of the Patterson Ranch road, and 2 miles of the West Coyote road, county roads 358 and 181 respectively, will also be considered at the hearing. Harvey Blankenagel has petitioned to close the West Coyote road, cutting off the east entrance to the Rattlesnake Rattle-snake Mine. This would still leave open access to the mine on the west to the main highway, U.S. 163. The Patterson Ranch road, which is asked to be closed, has been replaced by another road and new entrance to the property in Lisbon Valley, according to Mr. Adams. The hearing, to which the public is invited to attend and give comment, will be held in the LaSal Schoolhouse at 7:30 p.m. Anyone wishing more information concerning the portion of roads asked to be closed can contact County Surveyor Doug Pehrson at the San Juan County Courthouse, or Road Clerk Lynn Adams in Monticello at 587-2249. The San Juan County Commission will make the final decision on whether or not the roads will be closed. |
