Show Moab Gridders Aim for New League, New Season Something old and something some-thing ne usually refers to irareorn by the bride. It also applies to the Moab Red Devil football prospects for the coming season. Coach Glen Richeson. start-iig start-iig his seventeenth year at the head of the Red Devil grid squad, welcomed to the opening practice a mixture of veteran backs and some eager, i but untested line prospects. How well the young linemen on develop will go a long way m determining the fortunes of Moab this year. The Devils not only have new faces in the line. They have new faces on the schedule and a new league alignment. League mmit-ments mmit-ments have wiped out the familiar names such as Monti-cello Monti-cello from the slate of games. Instead. Moab will face perennial state powers Delta and Richfield among other central L'tah teams. Delta will be favored to capture the title in the new Region Seven alignment. A more immediate problem is the opener against the North Sanpete Rams from Mount Pleasant who will be here August 29 at 8 p.m. for the season opener -- and. the league opener. The Devils are holding two-a-day practices to get ready wilh about 60 candidates out and more expected later. Richeson says that the bulk of the prospects are ninth and tenth graders w ho w ill probably end up on the Junior Varsity. Varsity-wise Varsity-wise Richeson said. "We are pretty shallow. We may be able to use one or two transfers, but we will have to develop a line.' The "old" part of the squad now working out has some explosive backs that should provide some excitement. Fullback Merrill Noyes is a genuine all-stater with speed, size (180 pounds) and experience. exper-ience. Regular quarterback. Ken Bohn (6-3 and 180), can thrown long and had an excellent year last season. Running backs Jay Johnson and Don Flynn are both promising, though small. Returning Re-turning guard Mark Roberts will anchor the offensive line and may play several posi- lions. A defensive standout, Terrill Sebastian also will see double duly this year. Punter and defensive end Marlyn Wyatt returns and he, too, w ill have more duties. Newcomer Trent Garcia, who played some varsity last year, could be a great help. Principal Theron Johnson announced Wednesday that season tickets are on sale at the high school for $6.50. Holders of season passes last year will have first choice of seats. Mr. Johnson said. |
