Show I . . I Letter Prompts Rep orf on State Highway Building j In response to a request by the Utah Senator Wal- lace F. Bennett, the Utah ; State Highway Department t has itemized road projects programmed for Grand Co. j over the next four years. Senator Bennett's request i wyas prompted by a letter . ! from Dennis Byrd, of Moab. i protesting the condition of Highway 50-6 from Wood-side Wood-side to the Colorado State line. Mr. Byrd felt "iMs dangerous section of highway high-way should be improved prior to expanding funds on disconnected sections of 1-70 j According to the atate Highway construction itin-ery, itin-ery, no road improvements are scheduled during 1967 on Highway 50-6. However, during the next four years the 1-70 program will be completed in Grand County with the exception of an additional ad-ditional two lanes from Floy to Crescent Junction, which are charted for 1972 fiscal year. Henry C. Helland, Utah Director of Highways, stated stat-ed the State Road Department Depart-ment has tried to cooperate with Colorado so the 1-70 programs will be completed on both sides of the state lines at approximately the same time. He noted that the State spends approximately $1, 000 per mile for maintenance mainten-ance of state highways in District No. 4 which includes in-cludes Grand County. "This high cost is a result of trying try-ing to keep Highways 50-6 and other state highways in usable condition until our Interstate highways are completed. It is not practical prac-tical to rebuild these old highways with the Interstate Inter-state so near completion. The first road construction construc-tion programmed by the State Highway Department for Grand County is in 1968. At that time an 8-mile grading project oh'T-70 is scheduled from Cisco Wash to North Cisco, at a cost of $.2,200,000. Another 7-mile stretch, estimated at $2, 800,000, is scheduled from Whitehouse to North Cisco in 1968. In 1969 a $4,500,000 road construction project is scheduled sch-eduled for the 8-mile stretsh from North Cisco to Harley Dome; a similar 21-mile stretch will be built in 1970 from Crescent Junction to Wjhitehouse, at a cost of $9, 200,000. 1-70 construction in 1971 includes an Simile $6,100, 000 project from west Green River to Floy and a 7-mile $1,600,000 stretch from Harley Har-ley Dome to Colorado. ' Mr. Hellend reminded Sen ator Bennett that these scheduled projects depend upon the funding of federal highway monies. "If these funds are allocated as presently pres-ently proposed, we feel we can profcecd as outlined," he said. He also referred Mi'. Byr i to joint meetings held with 1 county and city officials in Grand County to discuss state highway programs and how areas will be affected by them. As a result of such cooperative meetings. he noted the Dead Horse Point State Park road was stirfao. ed in 1965, and this year tne state will cooperate in hard surfacing the balance -of the road, |
