Ten of the most daring attempts at robbery and safercracking ever committed in Salt Lake occurred last night. : Three suites of offices in the Tribune building: The Prtidential Insurance com nan v. the Utah Fireproof, com- pany and the office of Dr. W. S. Gipsy, were entered. D. F. "Walker building: Offices of the Salt Iake Brew-' Brew-' ing company and North American Insurance company, were entered. Four offices in the Herald building: The Nelson Vueen Consolidated Mining company, the Twin Falls Land and Water company, M. E. Wilson and the office of W. L. Winner, were entered. In addition to these nine places, the office of the Colorado National Life Assurance company in the Walker bank building was entered. In the office of the Nelson Queen Mining company the safe was forced open: in the offices of the Prudential Insurance company, the Utah Fireproof company and the Twin Falls Land and Water company attempts had been made to crark the safes. In the other offices, which contained con-tained no safes,, deskswere forced open and the contents one over. the burned ends w-ere found lying on the floor. The theorv that the parties who tried to forcp both safes were experts is strengthened by the fact that they left no toois behind them, such as isVisually done whn the act is committed by men ivho are not experts, and from the wav m which entrance wag gained. ftoth safes contained considerable mon. and it is believed that the would be thieves had knowledge of this fact. Mr. Waldorf, superintendent of con stpietion of the Tribune building, said this morning that he was in the building build-ing about 11 p. m. with a number of workmen who were engaged in fixing steam pipes. Heard Noise Above. The men were working on fv second floor of the building, and a tho left about 11 p. m.. heard some pounlir" on the fl oor above. He took no ontice of the noisp, as he thought that it was some of his men working on the floor above. He did not know of the attempted at-tempted robbery until this morfling. The door to the office of Ir. Giesv in the same building was forced open, but the robbers made no further attempt at-tempt to investigate the office. At the office of the Nelson Queen Mining company in the Herald building build-ing a new safe was forced open after the combination knob had been broken and the bolt driven through into the safe. W. f. Wilkins. manager of the company, com-pany, left for California Monday evening even-ing and the condition of the safe was discoverf-d by Miss Nelson, his stenographer, stenog-rapher, this morning. As far as Miss A'elson knows noth ing of value was taken from this office. of-fice. " Vc do not keep monev in the office." of-fice." said Miss Nelson this morning. Two desks in this office was also forced open, but nothing was taken from them. Five Desks Opened. I The office of the Twin Falls Land and Water company was entered in the same way as the others. In this office five desks were forced open, but the contents, including a box of valuable old coins iu one or them, were left undisturbed. un-disturbed. An attempt was made to open a large vault in one of the rear offjees but the attempt failed. Two safes in the office of-fice had been tampered with by the robbers. The combination on each safe was out of order this morning and neither of them could be opened. The office of M. E. Wilson, room 416 Herald building, was entered and the THAT THS WORK WAS THAT OF EXPERTS IS EVIDENT FROM THE WAT IN WHICH IT WAS DONE AND THE REMARKABLY SHORT TIME THAT THE MEN MUST HAVE BEEN ENGAGED AT IT. IN EVERY INSTANCE THEY WERE AFTER MONEY, AND THAT ALONE 18 EVIDENT FROM THE TACT THAT POSTAGE STAMPS, VALUABLE PAPERS AND RARE COINS WERE LEFT UNTOUCHED. j IN EACH INSTANCE THE DOOR TO THE OFFICE WAS FORCED IN THE SAME MANNER, BY MEANS OF WHAT IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN A THIN CHISEL. THE DESKS WERE FORCED BY MEANS OF EITHER A JIMMY OR PINCHERS. SO FAR AS WAS ; KNOWN AT NOON TODAY NOTH ING OF VALUE WAS MISSING i FROM ANY OF THE OFFICES, AS , JfJNE OF THEM CONTAINED WHAT Jr tE MEN WERE AFTER MONEY, "'hen the fact is taken into consid eration that men are employed every honr of the day and night in both the Tribune and Herald building, the at , tempted robberies in these two buildings build-ings show the boldness of the rob- berf. i How thev could have gained an en tranee to the offices in these structures and have carried on their work without discovery is a mystery to the detectives who are' investigating the case. The robbers, of whom it is believed there were three, were too wise to turn on the electric lights in any of the roomt in which the safes were located. Instead they lit a number of matches, the burned "ends of whu h were found this morning. The light of a match would not be likely to attract attention while had the electric light h.ive been turned on it could have bfeu seen from the street below, as several of the offices of-fices were in the front part of the : buildings. 1 Woman Makes Discovery. The first discovery of the attempted ! safe cracking waa made by Mrs. Bertha Wood, local manager of the Prudential , Insurance companv, which occupies rooms 301 and 302. Mrs. Wood entered the office about 8:30 o'clock this morning morn-ing A number of partly burned matches which lay in front of the safe attracted her attention. On going to the aa'1 Mra. Wood discovered that , the combination knob had been knocked i from the Bare. She at once notified the desk forced open. Nothing was taken. 1 The door to the office of W. L. Win-. Win-. ner, room 300 Herald building, showed t plainer than anv other that the work 1 was that of experts. The bolt on the lock of the door had been forced back by some instrument in order that the : knob could be turned and entrance I gained to the office. i In this office two desks were forced opcD, but nothnig was taken. A small savings bank containing about $2 waa lying on the top of one of the desks, but waa not disturbed. In the drawer of the other desk were negotiable paper of $400 in value. 92000 Waa Overlooked. Entrance to the office of the Colorado Colo-rado National Life Insurance company, room 1. Walker bank building, was entered en-tered in the same wav. The desk had been forced open and showed that a number of matches had been lighted ! (Continued on page 7.) J ' An investigation proved that the safe erakers had gained entrance to the office of-fice by foreing the door to room 302. A thin chisel was used in forcing the lock of the door. In attacking the safe the men sawed part way through tbe knob and then hammer was used. Another Office Visited. The office of the Utah Fireproof company, located in rooms 303 ana 304 were also visited. Entrance was gained by ising a thin chisel to force the lock cfVUhe door open. In the offices the U Fireproof company it is evideat t Blithe men were in a hurry as they difi Tot atop to saw the knob of the safe, but knocked it off with a heavy blow of a hammer. A number of matches bad been used to furnish light for the work. Tbe matches had been Kghted on tbe front of tbe safe and , ? .. V ... SAME BOLD GANG (Continued from Page 1.) while the robbers were making an investigation in-vestigation of its contents. Negotiable papers to the value of $2000 were left untouched in a small tin box in one of the drawers. Every available member of the po- f lice department was put to work on the case this morning. It is the opinion of the police that the eight jobs were done by the same parties and that tbey are experts in their line. The boldness and rapidity of the work is one of the features that astonish the police force. Shortly after noon today the Salt Lake Krewing company, which has an office in the I. r. vValker building, notified the police that its oflicf had been visited. An investigation showed that entrance had been gained in the same manner as in the other cars. The office desk had been forced open. h.;t nothing of value had been taken lv the robbers. Further investigation in the same building showed that the office of the North American Insurance cum panv on the same floor had bern entered and two desks opened, from neither of which anything was taken. |
