Show : iAS TO TEA IN THE CLUBS. . .The latest fad in " the swell clubs of New York Sa the afternoon tea. Dinner hours are growing later and later ; it is too long from luncheon to dinner, and liquor drinking to fill the void in the stomach has a tendency to stupify a good many men's brains. The, tea fills the want. It is simply the finding out by Americans what the Chinese learned before America Amer-ica was discovered. It may be the beginning of a great reform. Many people drink strong liquors only because it is a custom. They meet friends. What more natural !than to ask them to take a drink. A stranger comes to them with letters which always include: "Any (favors you may be able to extend to my friend will jbe held as a personal favor, etc." and what can a 'man do except to say : "Let us take a drink." Now if gradually the tea habit becomes a fashion, see what a thing it will be for the constitutions of men. In New York it is served with two pots, a sugar 1pwl, lemon for those who prefer lemons to cream, and with cream. The habit is extending from the clubs to private houses. In some cases a little whisky whis-ky or rum is added, and Scotch whisky is believed to assimilate with tea better than any other one thing. To add whisky, rum or brandy, the tea must be hot. Then the completed beverage is said to contain, health, strength and the aroma which is akin to the ambrosia of the gods. A single drink as measured by the little club de-panters de-panters is enough to flavor a dozen cups of tea. It is a splendid innovation and it is to be hoped JLhat it will be pressed until it becomes the rule, for pt present not only are many constitutions destroyed de-stroyed by the excessive use of alcohol, but a jrreat gnany business mistakes are made. |
