Show CARDINAL DEL VAL'S WALK A DAILY PERIL EOME, March 25. The Vatican is much troubled about the dangerous con-dition con-dition of the apartments inhabited by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Merry del Val. Here are the facts. When Pins X was elected Pope he' chose for bis apartments those which had formerly been occupied br the late Po?'B eetarv. Cardinal ampolla, and Cardinal del Val had to be content with a small suite of rooms hastily prepared pre-pared for him on the first floor. Recently a prelate, who is also Ja friend. of the cardinal, gave 100.000 francs to the Holy 8ee on the Condition that the money should be used for th v purpose of housing his friend in a m8l?, ner worthy of his dignity. It was deT cided that the money should be srentv j in renovating the apartments of the late Cardinal Antonelli, famous for the magnificent mag-nificent fetes which were formerly given there. It was then discovered that the massive mas-sive ceiling of the corridor outside those rooms, and which is heavily decorated with gold, was in imminent danger of falling. Cardinal Merry del Val. therefore, there-fore, who has to traverse this corridor several times a day, is, without knowing know-ing it, hourly in danger of his life. Tlio workmen are repairing this ceiling as fast as they can. |
