Show THE ARMENIAN EARTHQUAKE. According to the Herald df New York, the Armenian Ar-menian earthquake, an account of which was wired a week ago, was pretty severe at Bitlis, Armenia. The city has a population of 33,000. It is in a rugged, rug-ged, mountainous region, which long ago was the scene of great volcanic upheavals. The city is built on three hills in a deep valley. The scientists have located twenty centers of earthquake in that region, and 247 shocks have been recorded. The Herald states that earthquakes originating i:i dislocations, or slipping of the deep rocks, are most to be dreaded, while shocks resulting from volcanic . outbreaks have seldom caused much loss of life. J We are not altogether certain of that. Certainly the Mt. Pelee earthquake was about as fatal as any of modern times, and that was caused by an explosion explo-sion of superheated steam in the volcano. It blew he mountain sunder, discharging immense amounts of carbonic acid gas. - That being heavier than the air, it rolled down the mountain on the ground and suffocated the entirepopulation of the city of St. Pierre. |
