During" Dur-ing" the course of the fire seven firemen were killed and three others probably fatally Injured. The financial loss is heavy. Among the dead is: OAPT. JOHN EYAN of Engine com. pany.80. Injured: Jonn Conners, fireman. John Roxbury, fireman. -' F. D. Leopold, fireman. The men killed and . injured were fighting the flames from a second story fire escape on the Seventh avenue side of the building . when - the wall fell, burying the men in the debris. Capt. Heviry Byan was taken out dead and Fireman Leopold, who was rescued alive but protoably fatally in- tured, told the rescuers that six men leeides the' captain were in the ruins and that all were dead. This report was confirmed later. The fire started in the repair department de-partment from a grounded wire, in one of the ears and communicating to the paint and varnish rooms, burned so fiercely that it took the firemen nearly three hours to bring it under control. |
